After inserting a template without a cursor position (|), with 12.8 the cursor is now at the beginning of the template, before 12.8 it was at the end where it made more sense for me.
Was this changed intentionally?
This is a bug. There was another bug regarding caret placement or trailing chars being trimmed erroneously that I fixed and this broke in the process.
