database.

I'm using Windows 7. I have installed the Oracle client 10 without issues,
but for other reasons (9 and 10 databases). So download that one and install
it. You should have no issues with using a 10 client against a 9 database.

I have also used the Oracle 11g instant client with Windows 7. With instant
client there is no oracle home per se – you use environment variable and
path to handle.

BUT – you are not going to get much support from Oracle just yet. They
have clear and published plans on Windows 7 supp\ort being
“official”. And other than maybe the 11g R2 which just came out (and
I am not 100% sure about this), I don’t think that Oracle has added
support yet for 11g R2 or anything before. There is a doc on metalink about all
this.

Hi,

What version of windows 7 are you running, 32bit / 64bit.

I remember having a problem, when I installed 64bit Win7.

I installed the Oracle Client to match IE. MS windows x64.

And Toad would not see the the client etc.

I eventually removed the 64bit client, and install the 32 bit client.
TOAD then was working OK. At least it was able to connect to databases.

Regards,
Sean.

I have Windows 7 64 bits. But I understand from several resources that there
are problems with the Oracle 10 client in 64 bits, so I went straight for
the 32 bits setup.

That should work – can you either post or email me offline a support
bundle file generated by Toad – under help menu.

I’ve been running Win7 64bit with Oracle Client 11.1 32bit w/o problems. I
did full Client install and go against 10.2 (years), 11.1(couple years) and
11.2(couple weeks) databases, so far have not noticed any problems

Same here – the problem usually is that today’s hardware ships with
Windows 7 64-bit predominately and people thus install the 64-bit client without
even realizing it. I’ve also used the 10g and 11g instant clients on
Windows 7 – but once again it must be the 32-bit versions. As for Oracle,
they do not really yet truly support Windows 7 in 10g or 11g R1 – but
patches are scheduled for this year (see metalink). However it does work.

And for people who might complain that they prefer 64-bit Oracle client –
the only real difference is simply that your memory size cannot grow above the
32-bit limit of 3.2GB roughly. So you cannot retrieve a billion rows into a live
in memory data grid as quickly or easily (without windows swapping). But you
really should not be doing that kind of thing anyhow. If you need a copy of the
data and do a Save As, then you really should not expect or force toad to write
that data to both the file and the in memory data grid. The default is not to do
this (it used to be just the reverse). But people often still try this and then
are surprised that it takes a while J
