Hi Folks,

Would someone be kind enough to clue me in on how to reset TOAD to factory
settings for 9.6.1? I have colleagues with such seriously whacked out
setups that a reset or reinstall often looks like a panacea.

There’s a message here for 9.7.1 reset
[http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/toad/message/45636](http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/toad/message/45636)

but I can’t seem to find an equivalent path to C:\Documents and
Settings\Application Data\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle
where I can rename a 9.6-like folder.

Thanks all
Matt

For 9.6 and older, the user files folder is under the install folder (probably
c:\program files\quest software\toad for oracle\user files.

Don’t delete the whole folder though, that will cause problems. Just
delete Toad.ini. That will reset the majority of the options without causing any
problems.

Toad USER\_FILES used to be in a similar structure but under c:\PROGRAM FILES
instead of the now c:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

Hi Matt,

We didn’t start writing settings to App Data until 9.7. All user settings
in 9.6 will be found in program files. Unfortunately, you can’t just nuke
the “user files” folder because there are files in there put down by
the installer that Toad cannot create. You will have to delete certain
files/folders in User files that Toad can recreate if you have to do it
manually. The best thing to do would be to uninstall, nuke the original install
folder, then re-install.

If you want to manually remove safe config files, you can do so by browsing to
your Install directory and to the User files subfolder. The following
files/folders should be safe to delete:

\*.ini (all .ini files besides toadstats.ini)

All folders named after a DB or Schema

\*.flt

I would start with this, and if there are any other remnants that are
bothersome, we can guide you.

Hey Matthew,

You can also delete the TOAD\_GUI.INI, TOAD\_GUI2.INI, CONNECTIONS.INI, and
CONNECTIONPWDS.INI file if you’d like to reset Grid and GUI settings, as
well as clear the entries in the login window. These should also be located in
the User Files folder.

Oh yeah, and don’t delete TOAD\_SESSBROWFILTERS.INI either (If you are
resetting manually). The rest should be fine

Try and get upgraded to the latest release. Especially from the ancient pre 9.7
when major setup thingies got changed. We have done some mass upgrades and most
worked fine, but there were some glitches, possibly because of ancient versions
of Toad. Toad only officially supports two previous releases for upgrading. So I
suggest you upgrade at least once a year.

Actually 9.6.1 is already 2+ years old – and is more than two major versions
behind now. So it’s way overdue for upgrading to something supported – and
that works with versions of the Oracle database that have been released after
your Toad version:
 ![image003.png](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/quest/original/2X/1/187e453fbe889bc2fd850ee86a2c725971588377.png)

OK hear goes.

You scurvy knaves who don’t upgrade regularly should be half-hanged, then
drawn and quartered and each piece keelhauled.

Toad is not a magic wand. It is a tool that works through the Oracle
infrastructure. This means that when Oracle brings out new releases some parts
of Toad can’t help but be broken. This has happened and will happen again. If
you are paying maintenance then it is a no-brainer (except for possibly upper
management) to upgrade. If you are not paying for maintenance then you are
asking for trouble. As the garage mechanic said “pay me now $400.00 to fix the
brakes or pay me $5,000.00 later to fix the brakes and the body when you
crash”. There is an old Arab proverb “trust in god, but tie up your camel”
– so trust in Quest but get the latest releases.

You MUST upgrade.

I’ll add on a “Yes, but” to that.

In our case, we don’t have admin on our own machines. We have very tight
security controls which generally require some special permissions to be added,
though Toad has been getting better about that. And while there’s a possibility
that developers might someday get admin, that’s only half our Toad users and we
need to be consistent with the rest.

Anyway, it’s a long slow process to make sure that any new software release is
compatible with our standard image and all the other software products that we
depend on for our work. And you can translate “long slow” to “expensive”. It’s
not always that management’s being stupid; sometimes it’s actually because
they’re trying to figure out where the real priorities are.

So while Toad may be the most important software for some of us (of course it
is!), getting the time and attention and money to do upgrades is hard. We’re on
maintenance, so Quest doesn’t get any extra money if we upgrade. But that
doesn’t make it free or easy. Just like database upgrades, operating system
upgrades, new versions of Microsoft Office, and all the other crazy stuff that
lives on the PCs.

We’ve reduced the turnaround between new versions of Toad from about every 5
years to something around 18-24 months. I’d like to see it be once a year. Not
sure if we’ll ever get there. (Typically, they’re just about ready to certify
one release when the next one comes out and they have to start over.)

Keeping current is really good advice. But until Toad starts saying “this new
version fixes a critical security release which could let the bad people destroy
all your corporate data”, it’s not going to happen here. And maybe not even
then.

Best we can hope for is to be not too far out of date.

– jim

Ok… I’m disappointed… I was sure Quest had implemented their quantum code
so that the code knew what version of Oracle it was working with and just
automagically had all the correct functionality…

Oh… and I’m still waiting on that neural interface so I don’t have to be

Caveat: I just got back from a 5-day weekend so I’m probably feeling just a
tad facetious 😉

Thought you'd have one by now, seeing as they're only about $100:

LOL, now that’s funny!

Considering I’ve done some study of A.I. and have a pretty good idea just
how complex the brain is (and my understanding is most likely “barely
scratching the finish”), I’d be totally impressed if someone has
actually mapped the thought patterns sufficiently they could actually take
dictation using a device to detect brain waves. Heh, I’d be even more
impressed if such a device only cost about $100.

I certainly wouldn’t want to try and rely on it to keep up with a
developers thoughts while s/he’s coding.

It’s amusing that one of the reviews indicate it’s “good for
simple applications like pong”

… Uhhh… yea… Software development is no more complicated then
moving a paddle back-n-forth
