Not true – Oracle offers “plan stability” feature to cover this – where database will never allow an explain plan to be worse than the prior one – and will replace the current good one if the new one would be faster. This can be done manually in 10g – but it can be set to full auto in 11g. So there are no surprises J ---

That’s Oracle’s opinion on what a better or worse plan is? And is that based on Cost? Sounds like in 10g it’s not in play by default? ---

I’ve tested this feature – and it works quite well. In general (not always of course), it improves performance by 20% or more than not using it. And as for Oracle opinion – since it’s their optimizer and their logic that decides – yes, I trust them on this issue. Why oppose something that works. It’s new, you have to pay for this. But it’s nearly universally a positive net result … ---
