toad 4.7 beta, privileges on install-dir

#1

as i am (and probably most of the testers are) admin on the pc, where toad is installed, some privileged access get missed.

i just made the observation, when i manually installed toad 4.6 on a customer machine, he, when he logged in, got a java-stack on startup. it immediately disappeared, when i opend (gave full control to everybody on) the install-dir (C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for DB2 4.6). i can remember, i had to package this in every version i created, so i would bet, this behavior did not change in 4.7. (i haven’t tested …)

could i convince development to have toad working properly, without having to open any dirs under C:\Program Files? in a big company, opening directories is not desired behavior.

thank you,
Petr.

Hello petr

Toad obeys the rules that govern access to the install directory and instead
writes files to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Quest Software\toad version.
Both 4.6 and 4.7 should behave in a similar manner with respect to using the
users profile directory to write to and not the install directory.

Do you have a detailed specific scenario we can use to reproduce the behavior
you are seeing(or did you get a chance to capture that stack dump)?

Thanks.

hello Randall,

i did some installs on a fresh built workstation and organized an
underprivileged user to test.

i could not reproduce it in 4.7beta, but i could well do so in 4.6.

so do a plain vanilla install as admin, insert the license key and let an
ordinary user login to that windows machine and test. the little popup with the
version is visible, but after that: bang.

should i send this to the normal support?

regards,
Petr.

If it’s working in 4.7, I probably wouldn’t go through normal
support. 4.7 is the next planned release and I don’t believe we have any
plans for another 4.6 release before 4.7 goes out.
