Greetings,

Out of the blue I’ve begun having an issue with Toad for Oracle where it will crash silently (no dialog) upon trying to start the application. The only way I know it has crashed is by reviewing the entry in the Application Event Viewer, the most recent of which is below:

Faulting application name: Toad.exe, version: 12.8.0.49, time stamp: 0x56145048
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000000002
Faulting process id: 0x658
Faulting application start time: 0x01d17300627214c2
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Dell\Toad for Oracle 2015 R2 Suite\Toad for Oracle 12.8\Toad.exe
Faulting module path: unknown
Report Id: a155716f-def3-11e5-ac08-340286d2b76a

Unfortunately that doesn’t tell me anything.

I did find the crash dump file and was able to examine it in Visual Studio, and this does give a bit more information:

Dump Summary

Dump File: Toad.exe.1624.dmp : C:\Users\nb\AppData\Local\CrashDumps\Toad.exe.1624.dmp
Last Write Time: 2/29/2016 8:49:31 AM

Exception Information: **The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access**.

Ok, great. Here’s the problem though - Toad was working just fine last week on Monday and Tuesday, and I haven’t rebooted or applied any software updates since then, so why is it suddenly encountering this problem?

I’ve tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling Toad and I still get the same crash behavior, so I’m not sure what to do at this point.

Any ideas?

Go here: “C:\Users\<user\>\AppData\Roaming\Dell\Toad for Oracle” and rename the 12.8 folder. Start Toad and see if that works

Since experiencing the crash have you tried a reboot? If rebooting does nothing you could try to reset your user files as a test. Make sure no Toad instances are running in Task Manager, kill any you find. If there were any running I would try Toad again. If you still get the crash kill any running Toads and locate your appdata folder. By default it is located here… “%APPDATA%\Dell\Toad for Oracle\12.8” Rename this folder and try Toad again.

Hi Michael,

My apologies, what I meant is that I hadn’t rebooted between the time it was working and the time it stopped working - the very first thing I did when I figured out it was crashing silently is reboot, and that didn’t fix the issue.

I then uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled Toad - still having the same issue.

And I’ve renamed the folder and I’m still crashing silently.

Just grasping at straws here but do you have any other folders in your Toad for Oracle app data directory you could clean up? (where I pointed you earlier). Maybe you’re running out of disk space?

Sorry, I don’t have anything. A reinstall of Toad and rename of that folder would rule out corrupt installation/configuration files suggesting some system problem or a change that Toad doesn’t like.

Hi Brad,

The only other folder is the 12.7, which I’ve renamed as well - still crashes.

I’ve got right at 10 GB of disk space free, which I should think would be more than enough for Toad to start - I’ve had less in the past with no issues.

This is just a long shot, but…you might want to try running a virus/malware scan on your computer, if you haven’t done one lately. I found a couple random posts where this helped a couple people with similar errors in the past (not specifically Toad related tho).
