Using Private Repository

#1

We do development work on an isolated network without Email and without internet access. I would like to create a private repository in the Oracle instance on the netwrok. What purpose does installing SYS.UTL_MAIL have? I think it has to do with passing around the password for the repository.

Right. Searching in Help takes you to the Script Repository topic with this highlighted:

  • SYS.UTL_SMTP or SYS.UTL_MAIL must be installed
  • The database will send emails containing temporary passwords to users.
  • For Oracle 10g and 10gR2, this is performed via UTL_SMTP. For Oracle 11g, UTL_MAIL is used instead.

Donna:

So you are saying we can’t use Script Repository without Email? As I said there is no Email system on our isolated network. We could just pass the temporary passwords among our team.

Confirmed:
“The system relies on email to distribute passwords. In the database they are encrypted, so there is no way to just look them up either.”

Current implementation of Private Repository does have a prerequisite of access to email (via UTL_MAIL) . It is however interesting to see why in the scenario that you have, such requirement can get in the way. Can you please get in touch with me at anju.gandhi@quest.com , to discuss your requirement. Thanks.
