What are yours 10 most frequent kinds of operations/tasks in Toad?

#1

Hi folks,

I’m really wondering what’s your most frequent actions in Toad?
What do you like in Toad? and what dislike?

If you have a minute to reply, please indicate your role (DBA or developer or
architect and so on).

Regards,
Valentin

  1. I like the feature that allows you to right-click on a object and send it to the Object Details. I use object details a lot. I have it dragged up so it’s a big tab just like the Editor windows.

  2. I like the Import feature. I import a lot of Excel files into tables for various types of analysis.

  3. I love the results plane! I love that I can export it to Excel. I do this frequently. I wish when I used groupping in the results plane, I could maintain the grouping when I export to Excel too!

  4. I love the compare feature. I use it frequently.

…I have many likes of the product…aren’t the dislikes more important??

10 Dislikes:

  1. Everything I do, I do in a Editor Window, so I am very partial to the intellisense feature. I wish however I could turn off the automatic population of table linking based on established relationships in the database. Whenever there is just one establish foreign key relationship, Toad just automatically populates the fields. And it usually does this before I can get my Alias statement in which means I have to delete it all and re-do it the way I want it.

  2. I love the Object Explorer. I especially like the column breakdown that is shown at the bottom when looking at tables. However, I wish it was possible to click on the Column header and sort the columns. To ensure you know what I am talking about here is a screen shot: http://screencast.com/t/YmFhYTI2MTQt

  3. There are a lot of features in Toad that intrigue me. I wish there was video demonstrations on how to use these features so I could broden my horizons with the product and maximize my value of owning it.

  4. I wish I could export to excel from data grids under a table in Object Details. For example the Data tab. It is possible to re-click and choose Export -> Excel, but it doesn’t work…it hasn’t worked for many releases.

  5. I wish the format SQL formatted SQL the way I worked. It does some of the conventions that I use, but not all of them. I could submits some sample SQL scripts to demonstrate…just let me know.

  6. I wish Toad a feature where you could select a series of lines in the editor and the choose Comment from the menu. This would put a – in front of each line. And then of course an un-comment which would remove --.

  7. I wish there was a way to supress the error window when Intellisense throws an error. Allow me to send it to a log file or something and just flash the status bar. It’s really annoying when it comes up!

  8. Provide a way to do multiple column sorts in the results window

  9. The speed of the application seems to be sluggish when running in a VM. My machine is highly speced and my VMs usually have 1GB mem with 1 to 2 processors. This only started with version 5.0

  10. Dislike there isn’t a profiler tool in the product…

I agree with most of your Likes and Dislikes.
But for your Dislike #5: During development, I write every single query in a
batch, i.e. I separate them with GO. That way, when I press F9 when cursor is
over the query, only that particular query gets executed. (This behavior is
still not well documented in Help, although I think it is a killer feature that
should be promoted. I know so many people who just hate selecting a query before
executing… )

I wholeheartedly agree on item#6 . I am surprised that a commenting toolbutton isnot available. It is a basic feature one could expect from Toad for Sql Server.

Thanks.

  1. Provide a way to do multiple column sorts in the results window

Click on the first column you want to sort, then hold down the shift key and
click the next column you want to sort. Add as many as you want. Keep holding
the shift key to change the selected columns sort direction.

Like the previous email said about the comments, I just added the comment
uncomment button to my tool bar.

The one thing I do not like about commenting is that it highlights the line you
are commenting. So if you want to comment a line within your code and run the
code with the line commented out, you put the cursor on the line you want to
comment, click the comment button (or right click, Advanced, Comment) and it
will put “- -” at the beginning of the line but then highlight the line. So to
run your code with the newly commented out line, you have to either press one of
the arrow buttons or click somewhere else to unhighlight the line before running
the code or Toad will only run the code of the highlighted line which is not
want I want.

Wow – old thread!

I use/prefer the KB shortcuts. Or you could
highlight->RC->Advanced->Comment Lines. But you’re looking to customize a
toolbar to add the button (if it doesn’t already exist).

On a toolbar (I’m thinking the Editor one would be a good place):

– Click on the dropdown on far right side.
– Hover on “Add or Remove Buttons”, then choose “Customize…” when it pops
up.
– In the Customization popup, click on “Commands” tab.
– In Categories on the left, scroll down and choose “Editor” (NOT “Edit”!)
– Scroll down the right hand pane (about 1/2-way) to drag the “Comment
Lines” and/or “Uncomment Lines” icons to your toolbar.
– Click “Close” on the Customization popup.

HTH! Enjoy!

I guess I should have stated how this should work when commenting.

If you cursor is on a line and you comment it, your line should get commented
and the cursor should stay where it is at.

If you highlight one or more lines and you select comment, it should comment all
the lines that are highlighted, remove the highlighting, and leave the cursor at
its last known position.

Matt, I’m not sure I want it to work that way.

The idea that it would be more efficient for it to not keep the text selected is
based on the assumption that you want to rem out this one highlighted section,
then be able to run the ENTIRE remainder of the script right away.

While that may be true sometimes, often I’ll rem out a section of a larger
script, and then only want to run another limited section which I’ll then
do by highlighting that section.

Put differently: I don’t like it when the software messes with my
selections.

Valentine, Henrik and Joe Faherty !

I have one salient comment because the comments below are excellent… I have not
had a successful beta trial for code complete get in my way more than it helps
and the it crashed on a simple select statement, which I have reported
separately.

Joe , I have BCC you in on this email to Toad-ss-Beta, there are significant
point being made here that should be addressed in the Beta Cycle for they deal
with the core issues. There are some great back and forth comments from the core
set of users working the beta. Please take the time to review all of these
comments,

  1. I love the results plane! I love that I can export it to Excel. I do this
frequently. I wish when I used groupping in the results plane, I could maintain

Kent, relative to this subject ! Which one are you talking about.

Do you just use

Tool/export/wizard

Export to Excel instance from the result grid

I totally agree Toad-SS need a short-cut key to disable the intellisense feature
when it get in the way and you know what you want especially concerning alias on
an update statement where it get totally lost .

Igor, you were going to do that some time ago, I believe we left it that you
will do video shorts explaining the newest features. Jason Lee, demo’s all
product for Sales in the Northeast would be a great resource to put that
together for Toad-SS development he has terrific polish

  1. The speed of the application seems to be sluggish when running in a VM. My

Why do you just have 1GB for the VM, that is way too low, please explain. Our VM
have 3gb minimum for 32-bit SQL Server, the new 64 Bit have 6gb, where there are
multiple database present in the VM and associated instance.

Lastly, I agree with just about all of your Dislikes needing to address.

Darren, I am not following you…if I understand you correctly, you want I
select some code to comment out, the lines get commented out, and then leave
those lines remain highlighted.

To do anything useful in the editor after commenting out your code, 100% of the
time you will have to either deselect your highlighted code or highlight some
other code to run if you did not want to run all the code on your script, and
then press F5 or click execute. Your way requires one extra step every time you
use commenting.

Where what I am suggesting, one would only have to highlight code if they wanted
to run a selected part of code contained within the entire script.

I appreciate that you do not want your highlighting to change except when you
change it, but the fact is that highlighted comments are pretty much useless to
doing anything meaningful in the code and that is what I see here.

Currently the way it is set up, the user has to actively do something (select
other code or unselect the highlighted code) to be able to continue working.

#16

My reasons are:

#1 – Multiple levels of REM – sometimes I want to REM out a
selection “twice” i.e.

instead of just:

If the selection gets dropped, I’d have to re-select the range to be able to do
that.

#2 – Uncommenting multiple levels of nested comments would become a pain.
Say you’ve been toubleshooting some code and over time it ended up commented
something like this:

SELECT

Fielda

–,Fieldb

------,FieldC

----,FieldD

Currently I can select all the commented lines (lines with Fieldb to FieldD) at
the different levels and press the “uncomment” option multiple times in a row
without losing my selection. If they make the change you’re asking for I’ll lose
the ability to do that and would have to re-select the fields 2 additional
times. If the selection spans several “screens” of selection, that becomes a
very big pain.

To me it’s just easier to press the down arrow after commenting the code if I
want to do what you suggest and run the entire remainder of the query – my
hands are already on the keyboard anyway to rem the code, so no extra effort in
my mind.

Darren

Even with the cache turned off, and the newest beta version (5.5.0.418), command “View object at cursor” shows old version of objects.
Here is how to reproduce the problem:

create table test_t( x int )
– table columns are correctly visible with SHIFT+F4 (command Editor->View Object at Cursor)

alter table test_t add y int, z int
– table is altered, but SHIFT+F4 shows old version of the table (without columns y and z) !
– And that is with cache turned off: Tools->Options->Database->Enable caching=OFF

Kind regards,

Vedran Kesegic

Hi Vedran,
thanks for the details. Now I see the issue. CR82127 was created.

BTW, you can simply press F5 in Object Details window as workaround. It displays
correct data even without cached data.

thanks for the help,
