Is there a setting that will allow NULL values to be displayed as NULL within the results of a query without using NVL?

This is a very nice catch . We do not currently have that setting in SQL Navigator. We have raised an enhancement request on your behalf. Roman (our developer who is responsible for the SQL Editor component) will be working on this for you and try to get it in one of the futre Beta build. We will keep you posted with the progress of the development effort on this.
We are also working on the Bugs/Enhancements Tracking system/page in the Inside Community, which will allow you to track the status of all beta bugs and enhancements. This should be available for you very shortly.
