Toad 10.5 installation: 1603 error

I’m trying to install Toad 10.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit.

When I’m trying to install Knowledge Expert and Quest SQL Optimizer I’m
getting the 1603 Error.

What is the solution/workaraound?

Not sure that version of windows is on supported list – it’s for server
tools not client ones. Suggest checking the product OS support info to see ….

I don’t think you will be able to get any help on this board for an issue
outside of Toad. I suggest Quest Support. They are really good and can work
with you to find a solution for these kinds of issues better than we can.

The release notes covers some of this kind of stuff – Windows 2008 R2 is not
listed as it is a major revision to 2008 – in fact they did away with 32-bit
in this release:

http://www.quest.com/Quest_Site_Assets/PDF/ToadforOracleEditions_105_ReleaseNotes
.htm

here’s an example of the great info it contains – and why people should read
them:

Just to know: Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit is more or less the same as
Windows 7 64-bit.

I will ask another question:

Knowledge Xperts and Quest SQL Optimizer are handled by different R&D teams at
Quest, neither of which actively monitor this forum.

They DO have communities however, so if you prefer non-formal support via web
channels, to quest.com or toadworld.com and check out the communities pages for
said products.

Or, contact Quest Support.

Or, use google and key in on published solutions via Support.Quest.Com

If you have problems, feel free to email me personally at jeff.smith@quest.com

Not going to argue with you on first point – but NO – they are different.

I too run into 1603 errors when trying to install SQL Optimizer and have
reported it to the dev manager. But if I try a second and/or third time – at
some point it just works. I know that stinks as an answer – but if it gets you
past the hurdle until they find a real solution that might do for now. Give it a
try ….

OK, well I will work without Optimizer (I will survive without it) and
Knowledge Expert (thanks for Google) until the solution will pop up
(probably I won't be the only one).
It is sadly because Toad 10 + Optimizer + Knowledge Experts installs just
fine on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit.

But anyway the main reason to migrate to 10.5 is the (better?) formatter
which I hope will work satisfactorily.

Thanks anyway, Boris

I must be really bored, but here’s your solution

I also found this…

Hi,

If Jeff’s and Brad’s suggestions do not resolve the problem, please send all
logfiles under this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\Quest
Installer\Logs

The 1603 error is a generic error code for installation failure. The logfiles
will give us more information about what failed.

Again, you will get quicker answer for SQL Optimizer related question if you
post it in the SQL Optimizer Community:
http://sqloptimizeroracle.inside.quest.com .

Thanks,
Alex

This is what it helps (suggested by user "cchan" from SQL Optimizer forum):

  1. Run Command Prompt as administrator:
Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories
Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator

  2. Type the following command in the prompt: reg delete
    "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}"
    /f
    , then hit Enter.

  3. Next, you must also type the following command:
    c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32
    vbscript.dll
    , then hit Enter.

And now I'm happy Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit Toad and SQL Optimizer user

Thanks a lot, Boris
