CodeAnalysis support in the TOAD 12.5 Freeware for Oracle

Hi,

I need to explore the CodeAnalysis avaliable in the TOAD.

Which version of TOAD trial i need to download to check those features ?

I could not see that in the TOAD 12.5 Freeware for Oracle (64 Bit)

Sushil Nembhani

Freeware has many features disabled. You need to download a commercial trial which allows you to test drive everything for a short duration.

Here are the links for the freeware – which offers both 32-bit and 64-bit:

And here’s where to get the commercial trial:

For the commercial Trial, we have Database developer, Application developer, database administrator & analyst.

Which version i need to download for exploring the CodeAnalysis (CodeExpert) features ?

Any of the first three editions - it’s part of Xpert and any edition above that (i.e. the suites):

  • Toad for Oracle Xpert Edition

  • Toad Development Suite for Oracle

  • Toad DBA Suite for Oracle

look here - it lists everything:

www.quest.com/…/toad-for-oracle-v12-functional-matrix-datasheet-17099.pdf

I was currently exploring the Trial Version of Toad (Oracle Expert Edition) & looking in the Code Analysis part.

I am looking for the Code Review Tool for PL/SQL with the following features related to Code Analysis

  1. Identify Commented out Code

  2. Identify Code Comments are present

  3. Identity Header present in SPR

  4. Discourage/ Avoid use of Cursors

  5. Identify Complex Queries, not long but really complex ones

  6. Identify Long Queries

  7. Variable Definition that are direct feed from table columns should be the same as the column data type and length

  8. Naming convention of the SPR

Please let me know if TOAD CodeAnalysis support the above features.

regards,

Sushil

Freeware and trial are two entirely different animals. Freeware lacks many features - for example no code analysis, no DBA admin module features, even lots of basic version stuff missing. Don’t get me wrong - it’s good, but you get what you pay for. Trial is complete commercial version with ALL features in ALL editions enabled for a limited duration. So trial has everything - including code analysis.

As for you list of 8 items - yes, code analysis has roughly 200 rules - including nearly everything you asked about. I only question whether what we have will mtach what you mean on #6. We have a rule - but not sure I know for sure what you’re asking.

Hi,

Out of 8 rules we have mentioned, Rule 6 (Identify Long Queries) might not be avaliable exactly the same we needed ?

regards,

Sushil

Define a long query. Do you simply mean the total length of it in characters? If so, give me a number. We might be able to customize the rule and you can apply it to the trial to see it in action. Those rules are customizable although it's not really intuitive what needs to be done from the user perspective at this point.
