Compare schema issues

Ha, that’s what I was asking you! :slight_smile:

If one view is BEQ. DEFINER and the other is BEQ. CURRENT USER, then yes, that’s a difference and you should see it in the difference detail.

If the sync script doesn’t specify BEQUEATH at all, then the target must be CURRENT USER and we are changing it to DEFINER to match the source.

If the above is not the case for you, then maybe you found a bug…so send me some details on how to reproduce it and I’ll fix.

I just got an AV going back to my Compare Multiple Schemas window. I have a Compare files window open along with several SB and Editor windows.

Access violation at address 00000000085FE582 in module ‘Toad.exe’. Read of address FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

It’s cycling between 2 addresses, 00000000085FE582 and 00000000041A3C4B

Looks like I’ll have to kill it.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I was able to close the Compare Files window between popups, and then closed Compare Multiple Schema window between popups, and then no more popups.

I hit this a few times as I was creating this a new window. Thought I fixed them all but looks like I missed one.

Does it happen when:

  1. you are comparing more than one pair of schemas

  2. you just clicked from one pair of schemas to the next in the top part of the window.

?

If so, can you set up the compare again to reproduce it? On the “output” step, fill in a base output folder and check the checkboxes for snapshot files. Then run it and email me those files. That should give me what I need to fix it.

Regarding view diff, the 12c view is defined as BEQ DEFINER, so Diff Detail shouldn’t show a difference. Note, the view differences disappeared once I unchecked the View precision option, so Toad not actually finding a BEQUEATH difference. But when there is view difference, the Diff Detail window incorrectly shows the BEQ DEFINER as a difference, when it’s not.

Oh, I see. Is one of them 12c and the other an older version?

I’m comparing 11.2 to 12.2

Another small issue is the window color. When I start the compare, it takes the color of the active window. When I change the source connection, the color does not change until after I’ve done the compare and looked at one of the differences. Would, of course, be nice to have the color change as soon as I change the source.

The color bug is fixed for next build.

Regarding the false bequeath diff, I tried to reproduce it by comparing these schemas, but the only diff I’m getting for the view is “columns”

connect comp1/comp1@orcl12cr2_normal;

create table test_tbl
(col1 varchar2(30 byte),
col2 varchar2(30 byte));

create or replace view test_view as select * from test_tbl;

connect comp1/comp1@azure_11gr2;

create table test_tbl
(col1 varchar2(30 char),
col2 varchar2(30 char));

create or replace view test_view as select * from test_tbl;

The Diff Detail window doesn’t show BEQ DEFINER for 12c and blank line for 11g? That’s what I get. It’s not a big deal, just a bit misleading when displaying Detail window.

Oh, I see what you mean now in the “compare files” window… I was looking in the “difference details” TAB in the lower 1/2 of the last step of the compare multiple schemas window…in the :“Differs by” column.

Sometimes “new syntax” things like this come up when comparing one version to another. Just something to be aware of, I think.

I agree, like the NO INMEMORY option for tables.

Regarding synonyms - here’s the scenario:

create user1.package1

create user1.synonym1 for user1.package1

create user2.synonym1 for user1.package1

do that in both databases then compare user1 with all the synonym options turned on.

What I get is a Differs By table owner and the sync script has

DROP user1.synonym1

CREATE user2.synonym1 for user1.package1

I can reproduce that problem with the synonyms. Looks like the problem is that the compare and sync code is getting confused because each side of the comparison has multiple synonyms by the same name. I think I have a fix for that but I need to be sure sure to not break anything else.

I got this AV on Friday will clicking between a number of schemas in the results pane after comparing multiple schemas. I did not have the output stuff setup at this point.

I cannot reproduce any of these AVs at will. They seem to happen after I’ve been in the Compare Multiple Schemas going back and forth to hone my comparisons. This one was pretty harmless and I just continued so I could save my work.

Thanks Dale. This error tends to be dependent on the objects in your schema. I am not sure why you can’t reproduce it consistently though. As you commented, it may have something to do with going back, changing settings, and comparing again. What types of objects are you comparing?

John, I was looking for a way to generate a single sync script for the many schemas I’d compared. One reason is that I have to make changes to all the sync scripts for syntax that we are changing from 11g to 12c. Exclusions and sync scripts appear to be single-schema only. Would a unified sync script be a big deal (I realize it wouldn’t be for this beta).

FYI, I created a bunch of separate exclusion files, concatenated the files into a single exclusion file at the o/s level, changed the Exclude file in the Filter window to point to my new file, went through all the sync scripts to be sure exclusions were correct. This worked for many of the exclusions, but not all. I assume this is not how exclusions should be used, since exclusion files don’t indicate schemas, but might a cumulative exclusion file also be doable in the future?

I’m comparing basically everything that is schema specific - tables, views, stored objects (packages, etc), constraints, a few storage parameters, partitions, all related synonyms.

Another problem item - my compare settings are disappearing when I restart Toad, or rather are reverting back to some single-schema compare I did a while ago. Kind of a pain, since that single-schema compare are a very specific 1 object type simple compare - most options cleared, versus my broad-ranged many-options multiple-schema compares.

If your only reason for edits is because of versioning, maybe I could solve that problem with a “oracle compatibility version” setting, similar to what you see in the Export DDL window.

I think your exclusion file idea should work. I am interested to know what it didn’t work for.

I'll check on that. It should be pulling the most recent compare for the active connection. There is always Automation Designer -> Action Recall (or the "rerun" menu) to recall a specific run if you want to.

Never mind - it is pulling defaults based on the currently active connection, as you stated. I just didn’t realize it would do that, so wasn’t particular about which window was active.

And Automation Designer is another good item to keep in mind. I tend to forget that it tracks lots of actions.

Regarding the cumulative exclusion file, I went back to Friday’s compare via AD (thank you), and found I used the wrong exclusion file. Re-tested with the actual cumulative one and it did work as expected. However, I would think that if I wanted to exclude an object from one schema’s sync script, but include an object with the same name and type in another schema’s sync script, this cumulative exclusion file wouldn’t work. I haven’t come across that requirement yet, but in theory, it could happen.
