When I’m in the schema browser and am looking at synonyms, the script tab on the right-hand side doesn’t give me the script for the synonym, it gives me the script for the table. I would expect the script here to be the one for the object I’m looking at on the LHS - in this case, the synonym.

Use the “Create script” toolbar button on the LHS to get the script for the synonym itself. Everything on the RHS is the target object, as you found.
