“square boxes” sounds like a font issue. Go to Options > Data
grids > Visual. Active style is most likely “legacy”, but if not,
make a note of what it is. Click “Edit styles” Select your style and
Edit. From here you can change fonts for many grid elements.
“content”, “content even”, and “content odd”
are most likely the ones you will want to change… and maybe the column
header as well if you can’t see your column names either. Just be sure to
select a font that supports the data you are trying to view.
I did change some fonts using your directions below. But I also have a ticket
open with Support and they told me to select the 10g client as the “client
to use” when first starting Toad. I did that and everything is fine now.

Yeah, the client thing should’ve been the first suggestion to try, after
seeing John’s post I had “doh” moment. I never think about
people using out of date Oracle clients, but in the real world I suppose that
happens quite often.
