Can't Exit The Application

I am running Toad for SQL Server 2026 R2 on my windows 11 pro laptop for about a month now (after upgrading from R1). Starting this week the application will not shut down by either clicking the red X button in the upper right hand corner of the app screen or by selecting the Exit option from the File menu dropdown. (I fully disconnect from any database I'm connected to before trying to exit the application). Nothing seems to happen when trying to perform either of these options and the app allows me to re-connect to any database if I want to.

I have to either End Task in Task Manager or simply wait until I shut down my laptop and windows complains that I have the app still open and do I want to shutdown anyway.

Task Manager tells me that the app is getting 0% CPU, Disk and Network usage with about 356 MB of memory usage. Please let me know if you need any more information about this problem.

Thanks for posting this — the behavior you’re describing (UI not closing and requiring Task Manager termination) typically indicates that the main UI thread is blocked during shutdown, even if no CPU activity is visible afterward.

This is not a known widespread issue in Toad for SQL Server 2026 R2, so we’ll need a bit more detail to isolate what’s happening in your environment.

A few things to check that often help narrow this down:

1. Background connections / sessions
Even if you disconnect manually, please confirm via:

  • Session Browser → ensure no orphaned sessions remain
  • Any running background tasks (Job Manager, automation, or monitoring sessions)

2. Profile isolation test

  • Launch Toad under a fresh Windows user profile (this is the most reliable way to isolate corrupted user-state issues)
  • Alternatively, reset user-specific configuration state if your deployment supports it

If the issue persists, please contact the support team for more help at https://support.quest.com/, including below info should be helpful:

  • Exact build number (Help → About)
  • Whether it happens with a brand new workspace/user profile
  • Whether any automation or session monitoring was active before exit
  • Any Windows Event Viewer entries at the time of shutdown attempt

Hope this helps,

Thank you for replying. I don't think I can do the 2nd option of using a fresh windows user profile because my organization assigns the profiles to us and I've been using this profile for ten years now.

As for the 1st option of background connections/sessions. This happens if I start the app and then then try to shut it down immediately. The Background Processes panel is blank and I've not selected any database. And windows Task Manager doesn't show any processes running under the Toad for SQL Server entry.

And now for some reason my Tools menu is missing off the top of my menu bar. How do I get that back?

IDK, maybe I should have stayed on my 7.2 version, this version is buggy.

Sorry - here is the About info you asked for:
