Network error trying to connect to Oracle database

I have a user getting "

Network error:: 11004 - The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found" when trying to connect to an Oracle database via TOAD. All of the connection information looks correct. Any assistance in resolving would be most appreciated

Are they using direct connect or a tns names alias (i.e. tnsnames.ora file)? Either way can you post the contextual info so can try to provide feedback …

He is trying to connect using tns alias. I have checked tnsnames file and it is good

If the tns names alias is good then you most likely have a network issue. Tad simply calls SQL*Net using the alias - no magic or mystery to what Toad does. So if network errors do occur like this error message than it’s a network problem. Sorry - sure not the answer you want but it is what it is …

No, not the answer I had hoped for but at least I know what direction to look in. Thanks for your response.
