Toad on StackExchange

Mike McAllister had the idea of giving Toad a presence on StackExchange.

So I investigated it, and created a proposal for a new site there for us. It is
an involved process, and not easily achieved. It’s designed that way for obvious
reasons.

Here is the link for the proposal I created:

http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/38255/toad-for-oracle?referrer=lFN8JdBW
pjl-6tc1Qmy_ZQ2

If you wish to help advertise for this proposal on a website, here is the text
to use:

href=“http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/38255/toad-for-oracle?referrer=lFN8JdBWpjl-6tc1Qmy_ZQ2”>
src=“http://area51.stackexchange.com/ads/proposal/38255.png” width=“220”
height=“250” alt=“Stack Exchange Q&A site proposal: Toad for Oracle” />

Now it is up to you guys.

Good stuff! I hope we get enough momentum to get approved. I’ll do my
part.

For those who have never used one of the Stack Exchange sites out, have a look
at all the sites they host:-

http://stackexchange.com/sites

The basic method is that someone asks a question, and then other uses answer
questions. Anyone can vote on the answers provided. That means that the answer
that the community thinks best answers the question is, after some time, up the
top of the page. People can have discussions on both the questions and answers
as well. Coming to the site you can search the questions to see if what
you’re about to ask has already been answered.

Further details on usage is described here:-

I wonder if Toad will simply get absorbed into Oracle? How well will it really
stand on its own?
I know, Toad isn’t just for Oracle anymore but that’s what it’s best known for.

I’ve answered a lot of Toad questions under the Oracle zones at Experts-Exchange
(similar name, but unrelated company)

I assume you mean “absorbed into Oracle discussion on some stack exchange
site”? Not “TOAD the product getting absorbed by Oracle” the company?

There is no Oracle specific area in the Stack Exchange group of sites. And
personally I find the expert sex change site very hard to navigate, and
annoying. Personal opinion of course

…and $$$. I used it when it was free and was grandfathered in once they went to pay only model. That lasted for quite some time until they axed my account. I’ve since found StackOverflow.com to be as good as I ever remember Experts-Exchange and they normally top my Google searches for programming questions.

Michael

yes, I meant the Toad topic, not the Toad product
sorry if I scared anyone.

experts-exchange (sigh, that’s old joke) just revamped their look recently

I’ve been using the site for the past few years so I’m still getting used to it.

but if I take away where I know stuff “used” to be, the new design is pretty
simple.

I’ve used it for almost 5 years now. I’ve never paid a dime, and not because I
hacked anything.
If you contribute it’s free and contribute means 2 or 3 questions per month. It
doesn’t take a zealot.

Personally, I’ve only ever had SO provide me a useful answer once.
I only go there now if I’m desperate because it’s been almost always a
search-fail.
I long for the days when EE sites were at the top of google.

but, I imagine everyone’s mileage varies and I’m certain it depends on the
topics.
Some topics I’m sure have better contributors than others and some days better
than others.

I joined EE ~2001. For the past few years this is all that I see when I navigate
back. I get a message that my account was cancelled and here’s how to get it
back. I’d like to know how to get the free account. Any info you can send me
offline would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I’m on StackOverflow most days, usually looking at active questions tagged
[oracle]. It’s part of my daily routine.

There are about 16K [oracle] questions at this point. Only about 200 tagged
[toad].

I am trying to locate and install the DB Admin module to my toad so I can
generate a schema script. The only download I can find is for the complete DBA
Suite for Oracle. Is there a standalone add on for this?

The DBA module is part of toad proper (toad exe file) whereas toad DBA bundle
has standalone products bundled in such as data modeler, etc.

So all you need to do is under help – license screen make sure to put your
toad dba option key to turn on all the dba stuff – key is you must have
bought dba module and thus have a key to enable all the dba featurews

Hi Bert,

Thank you. This is what I needed. I will verify the license and get what I need.

Best Regards

Timothy Bryan
