Hi Sanjay!
Our Company decided to replace TOAD with freeware sql developer, we need
some strong reason & functionality\features which sql developer doesnt
have but TOAD have. could you plesae provide me such features\functionality
which TOAD have and sql developer doesnt.
I searched in google but not able to find enough material to convince my
manager\management which can give proper justification for my claim to use
only TOAD not other freeware softwares...
You're reply is from a thread on the Toad group/list that already touches on
a ton of the reasons why we -- WE, THE USERS OF TOAD -- use this tool over
all of the others, free or not. I'll reiterate a few of my pain points
here.
I'm a DBA. My business analysts do ZERO PL/SQL, only running ad-hoc SQL for
business data troubleshooting and some fun data browsing with the Schema
Browser. We put up with Oracle's free offering for three years (well, I had
Toad, but I had to support my B/As who didn't). It was the cost of the
constant DBA support that SQL Developer caused that finally shifted
management's decision.
In the three years B.T. (Before Toad), I and my copy of Toad had to run
ALL of the major ad-hoc SQLs. Why? Because SQL Developer MUST RERUN a
query in order to simply export its results. And if the query is
time-sensitive, well the results in the export may not match what you've
already seen.
I also got tired of the ineffable effing Java errors from SQL Developer.
We're currently running 32-bit WinXP (transitioning to 64-bit Win7), and it
was a regular event where SQL Dev would throw Java errors. And since my
B/As require JVMs to be running for their real work, it's not like I could
have them go into Task Manager and kill Java.exe -- it could be the wrong
one! So it created a mess that usually ended up in the despicable reboot,
and time lost.
In the years P.S.D. (Post SQL Developer), the only support calls I've taken
for Toad were "Hey! Did you see the F8 history! SWEET! I could never get
that working right on that other crappy tool!", and "I like the new Toad
11!".
Finally, this group is THE BEST COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR ANY SOFTWARE ANYWHERE.
The "community" includes the entire Toad Dev Team, a couple/three of us
that have been around here long enough to be given a title, dozens more of
smart folks that are generous to offer their own time to help others here,
and thousands (7.5 thousand or more!) more that look here for answers. It's
a great service that you WILL. NOT. FIND. ANYWHERE. PERIOD. EXCLAMATION
POINT!
Best of luck Sanjay! Will you let us all know how you've fared with your
attempt at keeping Toad and your sanity? I really don't have any vested
interest one way or the other, but I guess I want to know how this chapter
of your story plays out.
HTH! GL!
