Using Synonyms to query

I was wondering how many of you use synonyms when querying the database? And if you use synonyms are these public or private synonyms?

Your quick answer would help me out You can reply to this post or direct email.

Hi. I’m working on some support issues with Oracle and their Primavera product. We have been using TOAD Data Point to build our queries for the reporting tables. Oracle is quite annoyed with us for not using their synonyms instead of the views. I understand their logic and reasoning. They are pushing us to use their SQL Developer tool instead. But, I have to be honest. Their SQL Developer tool is frustrating to use. And, to further be honest, it’s frustrating that TOAD Data Point doesn’t support Oracle Synonyms and convers them right back to the views. I think this might answer a little bit of your question.

You are answering a post from 2009. It is true that we convert synonyms back into underlying object in the Query Builder. But that is the only place that we do this that i know of. can you provide more info on what current issues you are having with Oracle Synonyms?

Yes. I was aware of that. I've been asking for several years for Query Builder to honor Synonyms. Here's why. One synonym in the Primavera database has four views. During run time the view is selected Based on the application users security profile. How will TDP know which view to use? It doesn't.
