I just moved from 11.6 to 12.10 and am trying to figure out how to get my editor back to the display options I had before. I do not want the brace highlighting to have a background color but do not see an option for None. Hoping I'm missing something. Please advise.

Assuming that you've found the options to change this (From the main menu bar, choose View->Options, and then visit the "Font and Styling" page under the Editor node. You will be able to change the Foreground and Background colors there.
You are correct in that, currently, there isn't any "none" option for background color highlight. For now, I would choose a color that matches your editor background.

Right-o. I did attempt to choose "Custom" and find "none" off the Custom Color panel, thinking there might be something there. No such luck. Rooting for your option in the future.
