entity count limitation on SQL Server physical models in TDM

Hi there,

I’m wondering whether there’s a maximum number of entity that can be saved in a physical model? I’m reverse engineering a SQL Server 2008 database with 1000+ objects (940 tables, 123 views, etc.)

The reverse engineering works ok, but I’m then unable to save the projetct; it systematically crashes.

Hello - there are a couple of things I see that might be worth taking a look at. The first is that you are running an older version of TDM. If you are able to upgrade to the latest version (5.1) that may help. Also your OS has been running for over 33 days according to this and it’s not uncommon for Windows to encounter memory leaks which can generally be corrected with a reboot of the OS. Might be worth a try.

PS – for what it’s worth I’ve saved models with 10,000 tables – so your size is not unusual – meaning it should work except for the things Kevin said

Hi, thanks for your insight,

unfortunately, rebooting the machine didn’t help, and getting a new version isn’t an option, as of now.

I succeeded in saving my model after having deactivated the “Save Models as Formatted XML Files” option (menu Settings - Options, item Application - General.)

I was then able to save my model, and just to make sure i tried again to save it under a new name with that option, and it crashed again, so I guess that was it.

Is there a way to file it as a bug?

Anyhow, my problem is solved, so thanks for that, but the TDM team might be interested in following that lead, if they ever come into that bug with the current version.

Dont hesitate to ask if you need more details.
