When in the Data tab, I often use the Filter dropdown to “Filter COLUMN by current value”. I’m finding that I’m mostly using this as a quick way of entering the filter condition and then changing the actual value by which I want to filter. One of my most frequent changes (about half of the time) I change it from equal to LIKE. So my request is, could we have an additional option in the dropdown to filter LIKE the current value.
There are a lot of tweaks you could make on ‘Column = value’. I
don’t want to add just this one unless it serves the greater good. To me,
it seems like it’s just something particular to your situation, but maybe
I’m wrong about that.
Well, a big dropdown is just what I wanted to avoid. If I added that, then
‘filter by current value’ would be less convenient because
you’d have to look at all those other choices and make sure you’re
clicking the right one.
Maybe breaking out ‘filter by current value into two
menu items would work.
I could change ‘Filter by current value’ so that
instead of adding ‘column_name = current_value’ to the edit box, it
pre-fills the drop-downs in the filter/sort dialog. (see attachment) Then you
can change to LIKE or whatever you want, hit “add to filter”, and
OK.
Then I could add one more menu item ‘Add to filter: =
current value’ which behaves like the current ‘filter by current
value’
I can see it being very helpful to have the dialog enhanced to show the
‘Current Value’ on the ellipsis popup or maybe as another button
there. This way we can choose our own LIKE, <>, BETWEEN, whatever
conditions.
Plus, using the CURRENT VALUE button STILL brings up this dialog, so why not
just have it all on this screen?
Talking about the dropdown before you get to the sort/filter screen. It takes
the current select column and cell value and fills in the filter so you don’t
have to anything but click OK.
Richard wanted another option instead of it always being EQUAL to have a LIKE
option. I wanted a NOT EQUAL option. Johns solution is to change the current
menu item “filter by current value” to prefills the column dropdown and
value fields so you then just have to do is select your condition and click add
to filter. Then he will add another menu option that says “Add to filter
= current value”.

Could you allow us to customize our list? So if we find a common item for us
that isn’t in the list, we could add it? And we could remove the ones we
don’t like? That way, if the list gets too long, it’s our own fault.
I wouldn’t dream of asking this if I was using another product, but this
is TOAD, after all!
Good job John. At first I was a little confused at the Customize option. I was
thinking it was going to open the Filter dialog after I clicked OK but quickly
realized it just sets what shows up in the drop-down menu. Very nice.
So, one more request would be for us to be able to select the default action when I click on the Filter button. At the moment clicking on it opens the Filter dialog but mostly I’m selecting “Filter like Current Value”, I rarely open the filter dialog window directly now. Having it do my favourite type of filter when I click on it would be a big clicksaver.
