Got strange characters in results - TOAD 10.6

We installed TOAD 10.6 and our platform is Windows 7 64-bit. When I did test run, I noticed some columns changed to strange characters. For instance, currency code should be USD, but it should something like 单D䜀U某๔_.

Please advise how to get ride of them. Thanks, NMA.

Peter,

  • what is the characterset (and nls caharacter set) for the database?

  • what is the characterset in use on the client (NLS_LANG)?

  • are they compatible?

  • what font is in use in the editor/grid/etc where you are seeing the
strange characters? Try using courier new.

Toad 10 does Unicode, but some fonts installed on Windows can’t display
Unicode characters. Also, you may be seeing characteset conversion
between the database characterset (aka NLS_LANG) and the one in use on
your client. If you have %NLS_LANG% defined that will be used,
otherwise, the registry at HKLM/software/oracle/HOMEn where ‘n’ is a
digit.

I got it:

on my machine are 2 oracle homes installed

  • 8.0.6
  • 11g

Toad made the 8.0.6 the default toad home and so I got the chinese characrters.
When explicitly choosing 11g (and make this definitly to the toad home) it
works. But without definitly choosing 11g as default toad changed the home to
8.0.6 the next time and I got zhe chinese characters.

Hi Peter,

chinese characrters.
Yes, Oracle 8.0.6 client didn't do Unicode as far as I remember. So your
database Unicode characters are transformed into something else
entirely.
