I have MSDE on my PC and am considering downloading SQL Express 2008 R2 on the same machine as a new instance so I can have both. Is it possible to open one instance of Toad and and show the databases currently in MSDE and a separate instance of Toad and show SQL Express? If so, how is this done? Will MSDE and SQL Express appear as two different servers or is there some other way they will be distinguished? Are there any known pitfalls to this approach?
It is not a problem for the TSS to connect to several SQL Instances on one particular machine. I don’t see the reason to have two Toad instances running at the same time on your machine.
But in case you need it anyway - you can set ‘Allow multiple copies of Toad to run’ option at Tools|Options|Environment|General.
Let me know if you still need any assistance here.

Background: picture my hardware setup that runs dual monitors.
The reason I’m thinking of running two instances of Toad is to pull up the MSDE database in one instance on the left hand monitor and the Express database in the second instance on the right hand monitor.
Perhaps there is some simple point I’m missing about running one instance of Toad… is there a way to have the MSDE database open in one tab and park the tab + grid on the left hand monitor and have the Express database open in a second tab and park that tab + grid on the right hand monitor? I only know how to have the tabs on one monitor and the grids on the second. I want to see the editor text + grids side by side for this development project.
Thanks for the info. You can place Toad on both monitors, then re-arrange all that you need inside. See how it can be in my attached screen.
you can use Database Explorer instead of Object Explorer to see object list + details in one window (DBExp link is hidden by default on Standart toolbar)
make new Vertical Tab group for splitting Toad workspace into two different spaces
You can easily drag any documents between these spaces - I mean from lef to right and vise versa.
for anyone seeking to run 1 Toad-instance on one monitor and another on a second monitor (like me), WITHOUT the option "Allow multiple copies of Toad to be loaded" checked - because this option gives the pitfall
solution (I have Toad 13.3):
search for "run multiple toad instances" in Toad Help (menu-item Help -> Contents) and choose topic "Run multiple Toad instances" = use startup parameter /VIRTUAL
