SQL - Trace On, Execute, Trace Off, View TKPROF?

Is there a quick way to do this in TOAD?

  1. Enable Session Trace
  2. Execute Query
  3. Disable Session Trace
  4. Open trace file in the TKPROF Viewer?

We’ve been doing this alot lately and its a painful process of running the Enable/Query/Disable, open FTP, transfer file, open TKPROF Viewer to view the file. Would be great if TOAD offered the option to automate all this - a “View Results of Execution in TKPROF Viewer” option.

If you have Spotlight – I know, a big IF – it can read the trace
files directly off the server.

I think you should add this idea to the new toad idea pond – that session
browser on end trace offers option to fetch and open that trace file J

Hey Richard, have you seen the new Trace File Browser yet? You still have to
pull the trace file locally, but it leaves TKPROF in the dust!

Added this to the Idea Pond.

I also added a comment that I would like this as a single execution, similar to F9, that would do all of the required actions straight from the SE - including opening the Trace File Browser automatically after execution.

If enabling Trace requires a different connection (with the required privilege) I want TOAD to know which connection it can use (if its not the current one, stored in my preferences maybe?) and prompt me to connect as it/one if it needs to enable Trace. Similar for retrieving the Trace File, if it requires an FTP connection and one is not currently established then prompt me to create the connection so that it can be used. All of this can be done independently in TOAD so I’m hoping we can tie all these together.

This would be quite an exciting feature in the SE, I reckon alot more people would be getting/using Trace Files if it was this easy to create and view them.

I’d love to see this implemented. Like AutoTrace on steroids –
in a good way J

If you were to implement this feature you could use this to advertise the new feature:

Hello Developers
Look at that old trace file
Now look at me
You can’t explain me but you can view a Trace File that looks at me
Now press CTRL+F9
Swan Dive
Now look at the Trace Browser
That’s right, it’s all about me
I’m on a horse

As you can see, it’s pretty compelling.

love it

LOL… That’s awesome! Well done, Richard! J

Very spicy! But in an "old" way.

Patiently waiting for this to show up on youtube....
