Toad 12.5 Source Control: Microsoft Visual Sourcesafe

Hi,

What happened to Source Control: Microsoft Visual Sourcesafe in Toad 12.5?

Our shop still uses it, and the option for it is gone in 12.5 (it was available in 12.1.1.1). Can this be restored ASAP?.1

Thanks!

I see it in 12.5 Toad - 32-bit. Did you maybe download the 64-bit version by mistake?

Hi Dennis, I was using 32-bit Toad and thought I’d try the 64-bit version. Not sure why it’s missing from 64-bit Toad, maybe just a mistake or oversight.

Actually, Toad SC list will only display the same bit version and generally VSS is a 32-bit application (that I’m aware of).

There’s no reason a 64-bit application cannot interface with the API’s of a 32-bit application like VSS.

Actually there is. 64 bit applications can only interact with 64 bit dlls. This is why 64 bit Toad requires 64 bit Oracle clients.

To answer your question, please see my information from the release notes. Visual Source Safe support has been discontinued for Toad 12.5 and going forward.

Unfortunately, you are completely incorrect. There are numerous threads on the internet on how 64-bit applications can interface with 32-bit DLL’s. Below is a link for just one:

Perhaps someone from Toad can weigh in on this.

Well since Greg is the Toad dev manager - someone from Toad has weighed in …

There are many “hacks” to get around things but the preferred method is to actually use the “bits” that are designed to work together.

Have you tried using the SCC interface with MSVSS? You should see this listed in the VCS dropdown, assuming your bit version matches.

Hi Greg and Brad. I uninstalled the 64-bit Toad and installed 32-bit Toad. Toad 12.5 (32-Bit) still has the option for MSVSS in the VCS dropdown, so I’m using that for now. According to an earlier post from Gregory Liss “Microsoft mainstream support for Visual SourceSafe 2005 ended on 7/12/2012. Limited extended support continues until 7/11/2017. All other versions of SourceSafe are unsupported by Microsoft and by Toad.”, so if I read this correctly, Toad will support VSS until 7/11/2017. However, in another post Greg stated “Visual Source Safe support has been discontinued for Toad 12.5 and going forward.”, which leaves me confused. It’s in Toad 12.5 (32-bit), but Greg says it’s discontinued for Toad 12.5, so which is it, and when will MSVSS be removed from Toad?

Also, apologies if my comments came across as being rude, that wasn’t the intent, I’m just a bit frustrated and confused.

Hi All,

Apologies for chiming in late to this thread, I had not been checking my email. Let me attempt to clarify status of SourceSafe in Toad as best I can:

32 bit version of Toad supports Source Safe since 12.0. It is has never been supported in the 64 bit Version of Toad.

Toad only supports VSS 2005 is the only officially supported version, as it is the only version supported by Microsoft.

The SCC API for Visual SourceSafe is only supported in the 32 bit version of Toad, as there is no 64 bit SCC implementation (to the best of my knowledge)
for SourceSafe.

So in a nutshell, Visual Source safe is supported in Toad if you are running the 32bit version and have VSS 2005 installed.

Older versions of Visual SourceSafe should work with Toad, we just do not officially support them.

I agree with Greg about 64 bit support for a 32 bit dll. It would probably not be a major coding effort, but I think anything we write to support the VSS 32
bit dll is basically a hack, and asking for trouble.

As to the future of VSS in Toad: I can’t speak to when support for VSS will end, only the note in the Microsoft blurb. VSS is basically in bug fix mode, and
it is unlikely that we will add potential new source control features to the VSS API. It will be a Product Management decision as to when we actually end support.

Stephen

Dear All,

I have licensed toad version 10.5 installed. I want to integrate it with Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS). The version currently being used is Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer 2008.

I want to integrate this so that I should able to check in/out from my toad session to the server. Below steps i have followed:

  1. Installed the team coding setup from toad.

  2. Installed the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2008

  3. Installed the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider.

  4. Select Visual Studio Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider from toad view->Toad Options->Source Control

But when i am trying to connect to server, i am getting the below error. “The request failed with HTTP 404: Not Found.”

Can anyone please let me know how can I integrate them or what is the issue with the above steps?

Toad 12.5 supports up to TFS 2013. Sorry.

Dear Brad,

Thanks for your reply.

Actually in our current setup we have Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer 2015 installed.

Is there any way by which i can integrate toad with this. If required i can upgrade my toad version, but its not possible to go back to older version of Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer.

Please suggest.

If you are going to be using Team Coding I strongly suggest you upgrade to Toad 12.9 which will be available later this week. Support for TFS 2015 was added in Toad 12.8

Hi Brad,

Can i get any document how to configure the Toad 12.9 Team Coding to use Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2015? I couldn’t find it on internet.

I have one for Toad 10.6 Team Coding to use Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010?

Please let me know.

It should be pretty straight forward as we’ve made the setup/configuration part much more intuitive in 12.9. Our product manager wrote a blog which may be helpful as well… based off of TFS 2013 and Toad 12.8, so it’s recent enough… www.toadworld.com/…/toad-for-oracle-and-microsoft-team-foundation-server-tfs-integration-setup-and-example

If you have any specific questions as you go along feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Brad
