Arrow up/down highlights text

I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade to 12.5. Gave up. Opened existing 12.1 and now the editor is behaving strangely. Up/Down arrow keys highlight text in the editor. Can’t find a setting to turn off to fix this annoyance. Any suggestions?

Do you have a stuck Shift key?

Verify that your keyboard shortcuts are still correct. In 12.5 visit the Editor|Behavior page in Options. Click Key Mapping and locate the "Move cursor and select up one line" command. It should be set to Shift+Up. Similarly the "Move cursor and select down
one line" should be set to Shift+Down.

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately it’s not a stuck shift key. My install of 12.5 was unsuccessful but the key mappings you mentioned are still correct in 12.1. No joy. I can’t move around in the editor using the arrow keys and am having to use the mouse to move around in my script.

Karen

What was unsuccessful about your upgrade to 12.5? As many details as possible, please.

You could try the hard reset option of your keyboard shortcuts although if they look correct this may not work. With Toad closed, delete KeyMapping.txt in your appdata\User Files folder. Your appdata folder location can be found in Options on the General page.

Michael,

I can’t locate the KeyMapping.txt file. I navigate to this directory: “ C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle 12.1\ClientFiles\User Files” and it is not listed.

As for the failed download, I double-click the download icon in the status bar. I select Toad Devl Suite 12.1 for download. Select to save it to my desktop. The download completes and there’s no executable in the file/folder to begin installation. I’m sure this is operator error but I don’t know how else to go about this. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Karen

The key here is regardless of the OS, the program files directory copy of client files is the baseline to copy to app data for any user who logs into that windows box. So XP or Win7 you need to work with the user copies - and not the baseline files.

Ok, I located the KeyMapping.txt file and deleted it, restarted Toad and that seems to have cleared up the scrolling issue. Now on to figure out why the 12.5 download won’t work. Thank you!

Michael,

You reference Windows 7. I’m one of those dinosaurs still limping along with XP while waiting for an upgrade to 7. Do you think this is the issue?

I navigate to this directory: “ C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle 12.1\ClientFiles\User Files” and it is not listed.

"Your appdata folder location can be found in Options on the General page."

On Windows 7 the default location is... C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle.

I am not sure on why the download from the status bar is failing. In the meantime you can try directly from the website.

Thanks,

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately it's not a stuck shift key. My install of 12.5 was unsuccessful but the key mappings you mentioned are still correct in 12.1. No joy. I can't move around in the editor using the arrow keys and am having to use the mouse to move
around in my script.

So far Toad is the only application affected. I should also mention that left/right arrow keys are also highlighting rows. Navigating scripts has become extremely tedious.

The first thing I'd do is bang on my shift key a couple of times just in case it is stuck or has some undesirable gunk in it. Next thing I'd do is restart the machine if you've not done so already. As far as the editor is concerned your shift key is down. It's
using standard Windows message handling to detect when a key has been pressed. Windows sends a message to the active control (editor) and from the Windows message the editor can detect which key is down and which modifiers are also pressed. It's pretty straightforward
stuff and I don't see anything that looks like it would cause your issue. If the key mappings are showing the correct keys then I can only assume Shift is being supplied as a modifier key. We can test this though. Paste the following into the Editor. Note
that there is a blank line between "select * from" and "dual;" It's important to retain that blank line.

select * from

dual;

Place the caret on the first line and press F9. Do you get results in the grid or do you get an ORA-903 - Invalid table name error? If you get results then it's back to the drawing board. If you get the exception then your Shift key it down or at least the
Windows messages are indicating that it is down. I'd try the reboot, different keyboard, etc.

Windows also has "Sticky Keys" that can affect this. They are in accessibility options. I'm not sure where this is in XP, but Google will know. When I enable that option in Win7 and activate Shift sticky key I see the behavior you're seeing. You'll need to
do some digging online and in Control Panel to find the option.
