Create New Connection for Sybase 12.5.3

Hi,
I am new to TDA so please explain things to me as you would to your child...

I have not yet successfully connected to a Sybase database and need someone to point out what I am not doing correctly.

Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
SP 3

TOAD for Data Analysts Version 2.1.0.227

I have tried File > New > Connection

Selected Sybase ASE from the Group Dropdown Menu

Server: I have tried both the UNIX server name and the Sybase database name
Port: the port number given me by my admin
User: my user ID
Password: my password
Database: have tried naming a database or not

I get the error message "Client unable to establish a connection"

In advance, thank all of you for your help.

Bill

Are you able to ping the Unix server that ASE is running on?

You can do that in Windows XP by opening a command window.

First click Start->Run.
In the dialog that comes up type “cmd” and click ok.
When the command console comes up type "ping ".

If you get a response back then check to make sure the port number is correct, otherwise try getting the IP address of the machine from the administrator and use that in instead of the server name.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I created a case with Quest technical support. They have escalated to the Dev group. I will let you know how it works out…
