I’m blessed with “ORA-00942: table or view does not exist “
But if I put the cursor on a_table and press F4, Toad shows me a nice
description of the table. Thus I’m reasonably sure I’m not
misspelling the name. And if I click the ‘Data’ tab, I can see all
the data in a_table.
I realize that Toad is powerful, but all-seeing? Any idea what’s going on
here?
Thanks much,
Dan

Have you checked that the table F4 shows you is in the same schema as the table
you are trying with the SELECT. The SELECT looks for the table in OWNER that is
running the SELECT. F4 finds the table name in any owner.
it flies to johannesberg…and kicks the winning goal for england

And blows into a vuvuzela. Wow are those things annoying.
Why can't the broadcasting team filter out that part of the audio?
Or even better, filter out the whole competition and put something worth
watching on?

it flies to johannesberg..and kicks the winning goal for england?
Oh please no! The last time they actually won it (1966 in case no-one
has mentioned it yet!) was 44 years ago and still it gets a mention each
and every time anything is happening with Engerland in it. The USA match
for example, 30 seconds into the game and the first mention of 66 came
up. I don't know if they have noticed but since 1966 lots of "third
world" South American countries have won it far more often.
Anyway, my English team won at the weekend. McLaren F1 (only slightly
New Zealand though!).

So what does Toad-F4 do if the same table name exists in
more than one schema?
It looks, if I remember correctly, to build a list of tables/objects in
your schema, then in other schemas, then synonyms. Then displays the
details of the first one in the list. You can see what exactly it does
if you spool the sql or run SQL Monitor. Makes for interesting bedtime
reading!
I think I reported this as a "bugette" many years ago because I was
seeing a similar problem to you and it was driving me bonkers! I
personally think that F4 should stick to user_tables, user_objects, then
user_synonyms, then all_tables, all_objects and all_synonyms (or
something like that!) and if it finds anything in any of these, stop
looking.
Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]
