Stream read error when executing query against V$SQL in Editor

The following SQL executes once for me in a newly opened Toad 12.12.0.39 (or 12.10.0.30) Editor tab.

SELECT S.sql_fulltext FROM v$sql S

I get a “Stream read error.” popup if…

  1. I try to go to the bottom of the results in the Data Grid.
  2. I try to re-execute the same SQL in the same editor after the error occurs the first time. (Will execute once if SQL is copied to another Editor window.)
  3. I leave and then return focus to aToad window and/or Editor tab that has already produced the error.
Started out with a more complex SQL statement, but reduced to bare minimum that would produce the symptoms.

May be related to text content in the CLOB SQL_FULLTEXT column. Adding an arbitrary WHERE clause (e.g. WHERE UPPER(S.sql_fulltext) LIKE ‘%DUAL%’) to limit the results returns less rows and can be run repeatedly without issue. May try to pin down specific SQL text that may be causing the trouble and will report back if I come up with anything useful.

DB is Oracle Database 12c Enterprise Edition Release 12.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production.

Oracle Client is Release 12.1.0.2.0 Production on Wed Mar 21 14:08:34 2018.

Works fine against any Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production. No issues at all.

Have pasted the error report below offered when I try #2 above. The popup seen for #1 doesn’t offer the error report.

Would love to get my more complex V$SQL query working as I use it for diagnosis and tuning and currently have to use SQL Developer (gasp!) instead on my 12.2 DBs.

Thanks!

And yes, I tried the suggestions in the other posts for this error, even though the context was different, and removed the specified data files. Didn’t help.

The content of the SQL_FULLTEXT could be the cause. I wasn’t able to reproduce any problems here. Do you have Options -> Data Grids -> Data -> “Preview CLOB and LONG data” checked or unchecked? That could also be a contributing factor. Error would be less likely to happen with that option unchecked (but then would likely still happen if you double-clicked a cell that had some offending data)

The “Preview CLOB and LONG data” option is checked.

If unchecked, I don’t get the error as reported, and it’s a lot faster, but I also can’t review the SQL_FULLTEXT with as much ease, which reduces the utility of my query.

Gonna turn it back on.

If I stumble across a specific SQL statement that causes the error, I’ll share.

Another tidbit…

If I retrieve 100 or less rows, I seem to be OK, no matter what I do, even with the “Preview CLOB and LONG data” option is checked.

With this simple SQL,I can retrieve up to a certain point before things explode. I can retrieve whatever it retrieves with the first fetch (100 rows, in my case) without issue.

SELECT S.sql_id,S.sql_fulltext FROM v$sql S

If I am careful not to scroll past row 100, open the Grid Popup Editor for SQL_FULLTEXT, and then advance forward or backward one row at a time, I’m fine until I try to go past row 100. If I do, the status line says it fetched 25 more but I then get the “Stream read error.” popup and then my Editor tab is unusable. 100 seems conspicuously “round” but that may be a red herring.

Also, I then un-checked the “Preview CLOB and LONG data” option and tried the same thing, opening the (HUGECLOB) viewer on a row in the 90s and stepping past row 100. I never got the “Stream read error.” popup, but once I got past 100 I noticed my statements started including some extraneous characters, disappear, or contain nothing but gobbledygook or non-SQL nonsense. Here’s one of the more readable examples, which obviously isn’t a SQL statement.

C:\Data\Toad-12.12\User Files\SavedSQL.xmlaWtlICcl

The actual SQL_FULLTEXT for the related SQL_ID is this.

SELECT /+ FULL§ +/ * FROM “OMXMASTER”.“CLIENT” P

Looks like we may be overrunning a memory buffer of some sort.

My original, more complex V$SQL query with more columns and WHERE clause won’t even make it past 1 row before the SQL_FULLTEXT is fouled up.

If you have any other suggestions for me to try, I’ll let you know my findings.

Thanks!

-Rick

can you give it a try in the beta?

Ah-hah! I am able to reproduce it this way:

  1. 64 bit Toad 12.12 connected to 12.2 database, “Preview CLOB/LONG” checked.

  2. run “SELECT S.sql_id,S.sql_fulltext FROM v$sql S” in editor.

  3. double-click the cell in first row to show popup editor.

  4. close popup editor, scroll down past row #100.

I can also reproduce this in the 32 bit current beta. Haven’t tried 64 yet bit but bitness doesn’t seem relevant at this point. We did have a bug a little while back with the CLOB popup editor, which was fixed. I was hoping that was relevant but I guess not. I’ll try to figure out the cause of this one tomorrow.

Sounds promising…

To muddy the waters even further, I’m currently downloading the Oracle 12.2 client…! [;)]

Thanks for your attention!

-Rick

It seems related to the 12.2 server. I get the error with 12.1 or 12.2 client.

I do not have any problems on a 12.1 server.

More Info:

I can repeat the problem with a query as simple as:

       select level, to_clob(level) LEVEL_AS_CLOB
from dual connect by level <= 200;

The problem can be reproduced without using the popup CLOB editor.

I can reproduce a similar problem in a simple demo app. It seems to be coming from our 3rd party data access layer. I have opened a support case with them. Will post an update when I get one.

I’m facing the same problem.

Is there any workaround or a fix available?

I’m also encountering this issue - are there any updates please?

As I mentioned initially, this is a problem with a 3rd party component vendor that we use to build Toad.

We have had an update to that component about a month ago but it did not fix the problem.

I have heard no update from our 3rd party vendor about this since I reported the bug with them 6 months ago. I just asked again about it.

I have noticed that I do not get the error when I uncheck this option in Toad: Options -> Data Grids -> Data -> Preview CLOB and LONG data.

Thanks. Yes, turning off “Preview CLOB and LONG data” works, but then I can’t see that data in the grid…

Actually, I’ve just found that putting TO_CHAR around CLOB fields also seems to work, so taking your earlier example:

select level, to_clob(level) LEVEL_AS_CLOB from dual connect by level <= 200;

Changing it to:

select level, to_char(to_clob(level)) LEVEL_AS_CLOB from dual connect by level <= 200;

Not sure off hand what any limitations of this might be, but it just allowed me to do what I needed on my particular use-case

If you turn off the preview, you can still double-click on the (HUGECLOB) cell to see the data for the rows that you need it. By the way, the lowercase (HugeClob) indicates null.

To_char will definitely make this go away. In this case you are limited to the first 4000 characters.

This will be fixed next beta and in 13.1 GA.
