TDP - Build Query - Join Suggestion

Greetings… I just wanted to make a suggestion to the Build Query process in TOAD Data Point. I work with a zillion different Tables where I am joining Tables, using the Build Query functionality, but many times the Keys I am joining, may not be exactly the same in the various tables. For instance, in one Table it might have padded spaces, or in another it might have mixed case, where in another table it is all caps (even though it is the same key data). While I can certainly fix that situation by my altering the SQL for TRIM and UPPER commands, I thought it would be a really cool feature that, once I draw the join in Query Builder, that I could Right Click on the join and have a quick option to say “Make the Join UPPER for both joined fields”, or “TRIM both Fields when joining”, or better yet Do Both! (Perhaps in the Join Properties dialogue box?) Having this feature would make it quick and easy to ensure one is getting all the data back that they are expecting. Thank you for your consideration of this request! -Richard-

To Richard B Haseltine:

Thank you for posting in Toad World!

If I understand your request correctly, you would like a feature similar to my rough illustration below:

I have submitted QAT-6484 for this enhancement for further consideration. Relevant updates will be appended to this thread.

Thank you for your patronage!

Joshua, YES, that would be awesome!!! This would be a really great feature!! Another thought to make it even quicker, would be to even replicate those choices as selectable items on the first window that pops up, when you Right Click the join, without having to open the Properties Dialogue window, although I would still keep the options there, as well. Thank you so much for even entertaining this suggestion. I have to perform this type of join frequently, as different programmers and different databases have populated fields that are joined differently, and you sometimes end up realizing you are not getting all the results that you expected (so needing to make the Join TRIM and UPPER is usually the solution)! Again, thanks!

This would be a great addition!!! Would save a ton of analysis time when you are not getting the results you expect.

Josh,

Just wanted to follow-up on this request from a while back. You stated you submitted QAT-6484 for in-house review and I was wondering if it might still be under consideration for a future release? It would really be most helpful to have a quick and easy way to make the joins with UPPER and TRIM with just a click in Query Builder. Thanks for any update you might share.

With Kind Regards,

Richard

QAT-6484 is still under consideration and is in our backlog but not scheduled for a release. I like the idea. You give a few examples. I think that when we implemented it will have many more assist functions. So probably the hard part is scope out what should or shouldn’t be added. When we get down to designing the feature I will circle back to you and ask for your review. Sound good?

Debbie,

Yes, that would be fine with me! Thank you for keeping this as a possible future enhancement!
