you haven't give us much to work with, but I suspect you either have no
oracle client installed, or, you are running a 64 bit Oracle client -
Toad needs a 32 bit client at the moment.

That is the problem - that’s exactly the error you get when no 32-bit client installed …

Oh well, I guessed correctly!

Happy Christmas Bert.
All the best for 2010.

Morning Purba,

When I installed the Oracle Client and Toad on Windows XP
there is no problem, when i Installed it on Windows 7 i
found that error.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that Windows 7 has been validated
as a platform by Oracle yet. (I could be wrong, in which case other
Toadies will correct me!).

Toad itself has definitely not yet been validated on Windows 7. (Same
disclaimer applies though!)

I think that’s right Norm, we’ll have to wait for the Windows release of 11gR2 for a 7 Oracle client.

Purba, if you are using Windows 7 Professional you can install XP Mode (basically a free XP virtual machine) and use that for Oracle and TOAD.

Kevin.

I’m running Win7 64-bit and Toad 10(fully patched) and Oracle Client(full,
32-bit) 11.1.0.7 and connecting to 64-bit 10g and 11g databases w/o problem.

Toad 10.1.1 supports Win7, both 32 and 64 bit.

Hi Jeff,

Toad 10.1.1 supports Win7, both 32 and 64 bit.
I stand corrected. Thanks.

This is a good thing, my new laptop - being delivered 'any day now' -
has Windows 7 64 bit. Not that I'll be using that much of course!

But still requires 32-bit client - even when using 64-bit Win7. This is critical - won’t work otherwise.

So far Toad 10.1.1 and Oracle 32-bit Client ver 11.1 work fine with Win7 64-bit.

The Oracle Client installed complained a little that the OS was not certified but after clicking the check box to override the check it installed fine.

I’m running windows 7 with 3 clients (9, 10, 11) and I have yet to see any
connection-related problems. Maybe a 64-bit issue?

Hello,

I solved the issue installing ODTwithODAC112021.zip :
–select Oracle Data Access Components for Oracle Client
–provide the Oracle destination folder c:\oracle
–uncheck Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server

a+, =)
-=Clement=-

Configuration :
Toad For Oracle 10.5
Windows 7 Professional x86 Service Pack 1

nb : the Rich formatting does not work ; I was not able to remove bold

running win7 64 bit
installed ocracle client 11.2 32bit
installed TOAD 11.6.0.43
but
still getting the error:
Can’t initialize OCI. Error -1

Can someone help me troubleshoot this problem?
Thanks

What version of Toad are you on?

In some cases this can be caused by a dependency the client has on the MS VC++ Redistributable. You could try to install it and see if that helps. If you're using 32-bit client and Toad then use
this one. If using 64-bit use
this one.

If that doesn't work and you're on Toad 12.5 or older you could upgrade to 12.6 or temporarily download/install the
latest Toad freeware. 12.6 introduced additional error reporting if additional messages are available. Reproduce in 12.6 and perhaps you'll get a more useful message.

guys i have a windows 7 machine, toad 11.0.0.16, oracle client 32 bit 11.2.0.2

I would try the VC++ 2010 redistributable first, x86 (32-bit) version. It's a small download and install. Next, I'd grab 12.6 freeware to reproduce in case additional messages are available.

If you have any other Oracle clients installed, check to make sure that the one you want to use in Toad is first in your path. Normally you shouldn’t have to do this but there are a few kinds of Oracle clients out there that came with an instant and non-instant together that caused problems for Toad.
