With TOAD 10.5.1.3 I created a new user in 10gR2 with connect and resource and
read and write on a directory and went to run the new datapump interface.
Turns out you must have select permission on V$PARAMETER to use the new
interface - which is fine.
But rather than nicely telling you that, instead TOAD throws the generic error
(big ole red X error box) and suggests you restart the application twice.
A m ore generic way to state this might be as follows: when using advanced toad
functions (especially ones in DBA module), select catalog role is a must –
else you will encounter various error messages along the way ….
With TOAD 10.5.1.3 I created a new user in 10gR2 with
connect and resource ...
Without looking it up who knows exactly what privileges those two
roles permit on a 10g database?
How about a 9i database?
No? Neither do I. And that's why I never allow those roles to be granted
by any vendor (I especially "love" please grant dba, connect and
resource statements in installation instructions) on any database that I
look after here. It's usually just laziness as the vendor can't be
bothered to figure out exactly what privileges are actually required.

PS. Paul, don't take it personally, I'm not ranting at you! Just ranting
in general.

So you've dropped those roles completely from the database?
If so, wondering how often someone gets upset that they're
'missing' J
The problem I have is that I'm a Production Support DBA. The databases
are built and set up by other teams long before we get our sticky hands
on them. By then, it's all done and dusted.
Occasionally, we get the opportunity to do the installation, but 99% of
the time even that is into an existing database.
It would be nice if we managed to get through to these vendors long
before their laziness became a (potential) problem. Unfortunately, this
is government work........
