Please please! Having 'Can't initialize OCI. Error -1' Error when login to DB

I think this is the worst error I have ever had!

no details

no solutions on the internet (I used ‘Run as administrator’! does not help)

Please! help me

The error message most likely indicates that you don't have the correct Oracle client installed, or that you don't have it installed correctly. If you are using the 64 bit version of Toad, the you need to also have the 64 bit Oracle client installed.

If this is not the solution for you, then you might want to do a search on toadworld.com. Here is one article I found about it: http://www.toadworld.com/products/toad-for-oracle/f/10/t/23177

thank u very much for quick reply I really don’t understand how to determine the oracle client my PC has

how to determine Toad version that I have!!

In fact, all what I want here is to run a simple select statement! I’m not Toad nor ORACLE DB expert! at all

I’m really wondering here, why is it so complex to get to that command?!

I’m now downloading ORACLE client from this link:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/112010-win32soft-098987.html

it is a huge file! almost 2 GB! Does it really require all of this to just run a few queries on an ORACLE DB

I know ORACLE has their SQL Developer! which is claimed to be much easier and straight forward! but not so

I downloaded it and again! it asks for the 11g client! and the same thing! a waste of time! no results! nothing direct

Please guide me to the simplest way :frowning:

Instead of the full client, you can install the instant client - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html

The key is you have to know what "bit" you have installed. If you're unsure which "bit" you have of Toad, go to Help -> About and it will tell you. The key is that you have to use an Oracle client that matches the "bitness" of your Toad version. 32 bit Toad requires a 32 bit Oracle client. 64 bit Toad requires a 64 bit Oracle client. This is simply how Windows programs work.

If you read the installation guide, you'll see that this information is very clearly laid out - you need an Oracle client to use Toad for Oracle. There are also video tutorials here - https://support.quest.com/toad-for-oracle/12.11

I have downloaded ORACLE Client 11g 32bit. Not the full product but the client libraries only. A 668 MB zip file!

Needed few minutes to download, unzip and install!

And everything was great [H]

I’m now connected to my database server

Thank you very much
