Printing problem

First of all, let me congratulate you for the amazing software you develop and I’m quite glad that the company I work on adopted and made me use it. Was a nice surprise.

During the printing procedure of a physical data model, and having some attribute names quite long, I noticed that the table sizes on the printing do not match the ones I define when designing, making the names overwrite the column data type. This issue does not happen if exported to an image, just when print previewing or printing.

Any ideas for this problem? Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you advance.

Hello,

First of all, thank you very much for your feedback. We’re happy you like our product.

To the problem: Unfortunately, we have failed to reproduce the problem. Could you please provide us with more details? Does it occur in a new model, or reversed model or model imported from TDM2?
How did you define the size of the entity? Could you please send us a screenshot? Did you use Recalculate Size option?

Thanks very much for the details.

Regards,

Vladka + TDM Team

Attached to this reply there are two pictures, one is the exported picture of the data model and the other is the screenshot of the print preview (same happens when printing). The model is a new physical data model for MS SQL Server and the Recalculate Size is activated, and in design time it works, just seems to not be working when printing.

Regards.

Hello,

Thanks.

Unfortunately, we have no clue how this could happen. We have tried all available options and still can’t get the attribute name overwriting the data type.
It works fine for us - in official version 3.0.13.175 and also in current Beta.

Can you reproduce the problem? If so, please write us step by step what you did, what options you selected etc.

Thanks so much.

Vladka

Hi,
I get the same result on TDM 3.0.13.175.
I created a new PM for Oracle 9i
Added an entity
Edit entity, add attribute, apply, edit attibute, change its name, apply (at this point the entity resizes), OK, OK
File>preview (name overlays data type)

Hi,

Thank you very much for your step-by-step guide. Unfortunately, we are not able to simulate the problem.

Can you send us your printer details, please?

Thanks,

HP Laser Jet 4050 Series PCL 6

I’m currently using v3.0.11.11, but it seems that even in newer versions such a problem occurs.

Regarding the printer, it is a Samsung ML-2150 Series, but also tested with a HP DesignJet 7150 Series and the same happens.

Hope you are able to reproduce and fix this problem because, as you may see, is quite disturbing.

Hi all,

We still keep trying to reproduce the problem. For now, unsuccessfully, we’re sorry.

A few issues:

  1. What font do you use? (incl. size)
  2. Please try to set another printer in the Print dialog (or print to pdf) and then see the Preview. Does the problem persist?
  3. Try to change the settings of your printer and check out Preview then. Does the problem persist?
  4. What are your Page Format settings?

The Preview takes the settings particularly from the printer and partly from the options set in the Page Format. So, this may be the case…

Thanks for your help!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi,

  1. What font do you use? (incl. size)
Arial regular 8. Also tried Arial 10 and Times New Roman 8 with the same effect.
  1. Please try to set another printer in the Print dialog (or print to pdf) and then see the Preview. Does the problem persist?
    PDFCreator produces the same effect
  1. What are your Page Format settings?
    A4, fit to page = clear, Enlarge = 100, portrait, margins L 10, R 10, T 15 B 15 mm
    changes these has same effect

Note: HTML report ER diagram shows the entity correctly as does Export to Graphic File

Thanks very much.

I’ve tested it, hard to count how many times… So have our testers. Still failing to reproduce the problem.
There must be a rub somewhere. In any case, we don’t give up.

Of course, I tested it with the same settings as you, Malcolm. See attached an example of my result.
Note: Entity1 - Align option is selected. Entity2 - Align option is clear.

As soon as we come to anything new, I’ll write again. Thanks.

I’ve tested it with the default settings as well as customized ones and it happens all the time. Tested with a few more physical printers configuration and pdf printers (PDFCreator, PdfFactory, Acrobat 8 Pro) and still no correct print.

Note: just tested with Align setting switched off and it displays the right way when previewing, but if I activate the Align setting again and then preview, same error happens. Having it not aligned is not an option since it makes the diagram almost impossible to read…

Hi,

I’ve tested it with the default settings as well as customized ones and still nothing :-/

I’ve used Win 2000 without SP4 and with SP4 CZ and ENG,Win XP SP2 CZ and EN,Vista Business 64-bit EN,HP LJ 1300 physically and some others HP(Canon,Epson,…) virtually, for PDF PDFCreator 0.9.0 and PDFredirect v2,TDM3 official, patch, latest Beta and internal builds.

Still running fine…here.

I’m testing it again and again, but there must be something special in your configuration, which is not evident for first look or I’m burned-out and can’t see something “easy” in this case.

Sorry for that, but I hope that we can find it together.

Hello everybody,

To crack the trouble, we need to ask more questions/ask for more info. Thanks in advance!

  1. Information on settings of your monitor, screen resolution and any special settings if you have any.

  2. Could you please try to change the screen resolution to see if it has any impact on the preview/print problem?

Thanks!

Regards,

Vladka + TDM Team

Hi Vladka,

I thing you may have something.

I usually use 1280 x 1024. this shows the problem.

I tried 1024 x 768. The name no longer overlaps the data type in Preview. There is a bigger gap between the end of the name and the start of the data type on the Preview than in the model.
I couldn’t try other setting as my monitor won’t go higher and I (apparently) don’t have sufficient privilege to choose other values.

Whoopee!

Got it! We’ve managed to successfully reproduce the problem! Now trying to determine what exactly causes it doing further testings.

Malcolm, could you please let us know the following?

  1. Information on your monitor - standard, LCD, what size.
  2. Max and min screen resolution you can set.
  3. If you use TDM on two monitors.

Thanks!

Your help is reallly wonderful!

Vladka

Hi,

  1. Information on your monitor - standard, LCD, what size.
LCD from Dell. It is about 19 inch.

  2. Max and min screen resolution you can set.
    1280 x 1024

  3. If you use TDM on two monitors.
No - that would be a great idea but 2 monitors would take some justification!

Malcolm

  1. Information on your monitor - standard, LCD, what size.
    Laptop LCD, 15"

  2. Max and min screen resolution you can set.
    Max: 1400x1050
    Min: 800x600
    Native (currently in use): 1400x1050

  3. If you use TDM on two monitors.
    No.

Have also tried to use some of the other resolutions and in some the names do not overlay the data types, but entities get on top of the other. Seems like you have some problems regarding different screen resolutions.
