RE: [Toad for Oracle - Discussion Forum] TOAD crashing when switching to a workspace in which a saved connection is offline.

Hi Jacob,

I can’t reproduce this issue. I made a DB connection then saved my workspace. I shut down Toad, shut down the DB, reopened Toad and opened my workspace. I get the same error about the DB not being available and click either OK or Jump and Toad is completely responsive.

I’m curious what happens if you open Toad, don’t select a workspace, just try to connect to this DB without loading a workspace. Same issue? If so, this issue could be more about the state of the DB. Is it shut down completely and unmounted? Is the DB in startup/shutdown mode? Do you have any custom scripts that run when you connect to this DB?

TOAD crashing when switching to a workspace in which a saved connection is offline.

TOAD crashing when switching to a workspace in which a saved connection is offline.

I receive the error saying the database is offline, which is completely fine and expected. After clicking “ok” or “jump”, TOAD will hang and crash every time.

I assume the dev or support people read these, but they are wanting me to jump through too many hoops to submit a bug to the point the link in the email about the SR doesn’t even take me to the SR page, just the support home.

No custom scripts are ran. To be fair, the database was in the process of being refreshed with RMAN and when I said “offline” I should have said “not mounted”. This issue is most likely related to the state of the database as you suggest. If the database is truly shutdown the error I receive indicates it isn’t available and TOAD continues to respond. I should have clarified that, I apologize.

Please try to place the database in a STARTUP NOMOUNT state and try again. I was able to reproduce the error by doing so. In fact, the crash occurs without using the workspace functionality if I try to connect when the database is isn’t mounted.

Thanks,

I wasn’t able to get the pictures in my original post to load and I was able to communicate with the support team without going through all the extra steps. Because of which, I deleted my original post. I noticed this one you created and my reply contained some of my personal information. I edited my response, but don’t need to have this separate support thread. Will you please delete this post?

No worries. I’ll look for this case to come thought support then

Some one from support suggested to rename file ToadActions.dat and after doing this, I closed laptop while leaving office and when logged to laptop it gave message ad do you want to connect and then it is not crashed only 2-3 times. I.e. 3rd time onwards again same problem of crahsing, rarely once in 1 week it is asking do you want to connect (I haven’t check check box for automatic connection). I am trying to raise request for SQL developer instead of following this stupid software. The following is the error message.

Problem signature:

I would take a look at this article from Microsoft on the issue-

I am not sure if this is the same bug but…

I recently discovered that the Object Palette in 64 bit Toad can cause a crash if you are changing to a connection that is no longer connected.

So if you have 64 bit Toad, and your Object Palette is open, then close the Object Palette and I think your error will go away.

The Object Palette bug is fixed for the next beta.
