Afternoon all,
I’ve noticed a wee foible with the Excel File and Excel Instance options
in Toad 10GA - so it may be fixed already in the Beta.
The font passed to the excel file is Arial 10 and the column headings
are not emboldened.
The font passed to the excel instance is Arial 12 and the column
headings are bold.
Just a consistency niggle.
And a question, if Toad opens the Excel File after writing, all
subsequent excel Instances go to that spreadsheet.
If I open Excel and load the correct spreadsheet file I need to append
sheets to, selecting Excel Instance gives me a brand new instance of
Excel and appends to that.
Is there anyway to make Excel/Toad talk to the “most recently opened”
instance of Excel?
Thanks.
Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]

As to the last question, the way I understand it, it will always talk to the
most recent active worksheet, so wherever you clicked in Excel last…
Hi Norm,
The header boldness consistency between excel file and instance is fixed in
beta. The font used in excel instance is just the default excel font – we
don’t specify it (we just specify bold).
In the excel instance format, Toad sends data to the ‘active’ excel
instance, returned by the MS’s GetActiveOleObject call. If it can’t
find anything, then we create a new excel instance. Other users have pointed out
MS’s determination of which one is ‘active’ isn’t very
good, and I have observed that also. Ideally, I’d like to be able to give
you a choice of which workbook to write to (or at least make it predictable
about which one will be chosen), but I haven’t done that yet.

Hi Jeff,
As to the last question, the way I understand it, it will
always talk to the most recent active worksheet, so wherever
you clicked in Excel last...
that's also what I thought, but not here. I've just exported an Excel
Instance and just before I clicked OK, I clicked into the spreadsheet I
have open already.
Click OK, and a new instance of Excel was started and the grid dumped
into it. From now on, all new instances will go to this instance.
It may be an Excel thing - I'm on Office 2003 at the moment.
Cheers,

Hi John,

Ok, I'll have to get hold of the beta - maybe tonight at home, I have
Windows 7 sitting on my new laptop doing nothing. I'll get GA and Beta
installed there.
In the excel instance format, Toad sends data to the
'active' excel instance, returned by the MS's
GetActiveOleObject call.
Ah, that explains it. Microsoft APIs! Yeuch!
If it can't find anything, then we
create a new excel instance. Other users have pointed out
MS's determination of which one is 'active' isn't very good,
and I have observed that also.
That's what I'm seeing here. It's starts a new instance even if there is
an active one already. After it has created one, it's happy to use that
as active from then on.
Ideally, I'd like to be
able to give you a choice of which workbook to write to (or
at least make it predictable about which one will be
chosen), but I haven't done that yet.
Something to look forward to, thanks.
Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]

Wow, that's a new one for me. It's sunk to a new low!
Never underestimate the power of Windows to surprise you!
Q. Why is a PC like air conditioning?
A. It's useless when you open windows!
