Check for updates in Toad 2025 R3

Hi,

I upgrade Toad from 2025 R2 Patch1 to 2025 R3 and I noticed that I don’t have in my Help menu anymore command Check for Updates. Even If I go under Customize toolbar I can’t find anymore that command. How can I then check for new version from Toad?

Toad for Oracle 2025 R3 includes the “Auto Update” feature. This feature was available previously in the Toad for Oracle Subscription build/installer, but is now available to all 64-bit Toad for Oracle users. When a new update is available you will be notified via Windows tray notification.

What about if I don’t want auto checking (when you want) and only to check (when I want) on demand? What about about privacy?

If I search for update in Settings dialog cursor jump where option is still in R2, but control is hidden. Why? Is this your bug and will be visible again with next release?

Auto Update is a read-only feature that makes 2 HTTP requests. No information from your machine is transmitted out. One request is to retrieve a list of rules to be used locally to identify the version of Toad installed on your machine. The second is to see if an update is available for your installed version. When an update is available, its installer is automatically downloaded and you will be notified via System Tray notification.

The Options search logic is a defect. It should not be finding controls that are unavailable. I’ll log this.

You can disable the Auto Update feature and monitor email notifications from Toad World and Quest. Quest sends an email to customers when new versions are available and the team makes a post here in this group. Our release cadence is approximately every 6 months, Spring and Fall.

To disable Auto Update:

  • Stop the Quest Update Service Windows Service and set its startup mode to Manual
  • Stop the QuestUpdate.NotificationUI.exe process if it is running and remove it from the list of Windows Startup Apps

I disabled this service. I don’t understand why this option had to be removed. I can manage updates myself whenever I want, and I shouldn’t have to do that on every run or generate analytic data. From my point of view, the app is now less user-friendly and more focused on data tracking, because we no longer have the option to set this ourselves.

I'll bring your concerns up with the rest of the team.

To be clear, Auto Update is not intended for analytics. It is a service with cloud and desktop components and we do know basic info regarding the flow of operations, for example when the desktop client is checking for updates and if any exceptions have occurred. Exception data is the only data of use and if there are exceptions we can see the flow that lead to them.

Hi,

I stop last time Quest Update Service (the 2nd one above mentioned I don’t have) and set it to Manual mode. And restart Toad at least two times and every morning I still get notification that Toad cannot check for updates. How can I fully disable “your disabled” checking for updates (= like it was before where you can uncheck this in Toad settings) in Toad? I would like to check for updates by myself, simply by selecting command from the menu.

Be sure to look in Background Processes, etc. If you are seeing that dialog the QuestUpdate.NotificationUI.exe process is running.

I am unaware of any privileges that would prevent you from seeing it in Task Manager. I can spot it using Process Explorer (Sysinternals) as well as using Windows Task Manager. If you do not see it try running Task Manager using the Run as Administrator option.

Also be sure you have removed it from the list of Windows Startup Apps. If it is present and toggled on, it will return upon restart and show exactly the message you’ve shared because it cannot communicate with the (stopped) Windows Service.
