Toad Freeware Expired

Morning Monty,

Please read this all the way to the end, and then read it again,
following the steps one by one EXACTLY! Thanks.

Today is June 27th, 2011
Different time zone to me then! It's 28th here!

and the TOAD Freeware download is NOT working.
Oh yes it is, I know this for a fact because I downloaded it and it
works. My one was originally dated September 2010 and it updated quite
happily when I did as follows.

I have to reset my system clock to run TOAD Freeware.
Hmmm.

Please fix it!! Somebody?
One more time, then you are going to have to supply proper details of
"what is not working" alongside "exactly what you did".

  1. I presume you have had FreeToad installed in the past? If so, you
already have a folder for the install. If not, download (you may already
have done so) and execute the installer. Go to step 2 when you have
    installed it.

  2. Download the update - if you have not done so already - from the
website so frequently given here this past week.
    http://toadworld.com/Freeware/ToadforOracleFreeware/tabid/558/Default.as
    px

  3. Extract the single file inside it - note the name, toadfreeware.exe
    it's not toad.exe. (Clue!)

  4. Try double-clicking on toad.exe in the free toad install folder. It
has expired yes? Good, rename or delete that toad.exe file. You don't
need it and it is of no use. Now, as a test, run it again from your
normal shortcut - does it fail? Cannot find toad.exe? Good! If it still
says expired, you are updating the wrong folder by the look of things.
(or do your shortcuts reference toadfreeware.exe rather than toad.exe?)

  5. Now, in that same folder where toad.exe was, double click on
toadfreeware.exe - it works yes? If no, then your download "worked" but
you have been fed toad's update zip file either from browser cache or
your proxy cache. It's up to you to make those cache's go away so that
you can get to the latest update file. Caching is in your browser or in
your company's proxy - not a Quest problem at all.

  6. Rename toadfreeware.exe to toad.exe to replace the expired one. (Or
edit your shortcuts to execute toadfreeware.exe rather than toad.exe.)

  7. Try running toad free from your icons/shortcuts/however you normally
    run it. It works yes?

  8. Job done.

I suspect you have not been following this list too closely and are
possibly not aware that the updated file is now called toadfreeware.exe
but your previous shortcuts etc all pointed at toad.exe. Because you
extracted the new named file, your shortcuts still execute the expired
toad.exe file and not the new one - toadfreeware.exe.

Because I know the download works and the file extracts and runs -
when either it or the shortcuts are renamed, then either you are doing
something wrong or you are being foiled by your browser/proxy cache. If,
after following the above steps, it still doesn't work, please get back
detailing everything you did in order and please supply the file names
and dates for the toadfreeware.exe file that you download. Thanks.

HTH

Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]

Norm, it is NOT fixed. Please don’t be condescending, you appear “whingy and uppity!”
I downloaded and installed “ToadforOracle106SetupFreeware.msi” as a local file (outside of my browser). TOAD freeware continues to report the software has expired, even after performing more drastic measures to remove the previous “expired” version of TOAD 10.6 Freeware (clearing all cache files, clearing temp files, deleting hkcu and hklm quest\toad oracle keys. The update “ToadFreeware.exe” refuses to run. It continues to report “TOAD has encountered an unexpected error. Details: TOAD cannot access necessary installation files…”

I then downloaded and installed TOAD Oracle Freeware “ToadforOracle106SetupFreeware.msi” on a new PC that has never seen TOAD. TOAD is reporting “This version of Toad for Oracle has expired. You must download a new version before proceeding.” I sir am now 100% positive it is not a client issue.

I understand the implications of “freeware”. Regardless, this reflects on the entire product line and does not bode well for any Quest software. Please reconsider your statements.

From a previous and one of MANY on the subject -

  1. Go here:

http://toadworld.com/Freeware/ToadforOracleFreeware/tabid/558/Default.aspx

  1. Click the second button which says "Download Update":

  2. This downloads the Toad executable, which is named "ToadFreeware.exe."

  3. Copy ToadFreeware.exe into your Toad Freeware installation directory, for
    example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle 10.6 Freeware

  1. Rename ToadFreeware.exe to Toad.exe.

You screwed something up somewhere. I just uninstalled and reinstalled without
issue.

Download the installer (unless you have it installed)

Download the updated exe and place in your installation folder

*** VERY IMPORTANT AND CRITICAL STEPS FOLLOW ***

DELETE OLD TOAD.EXE

RENAME THE UPDATED EXE TO TOAD.EXE

Hi Booby,

Norm, it is NOT fixed.
I'm afraid it always was. Sorry.

Please don't be condescending, you appear
"whingy and uppity!"
I did use a smiley to indicate humour, apologies if you took it otherwise.

I downloaded and installed "ToadforOracle106SetupFreeware.msi" as a
local file (outside of my browser).
Ok, that's the main installer, which installs lots of files that free
toad requires. This is good. However, please note that the toad.exe
within that installation is expired, most likely, by now. It will need
to be replaced by downloading and unpacking the update.

TOAD freeware continues to report the software has expired,
This is indeed the problem I alluded to above. Try double clicking on
toad.exe in the above install directory (wherever you put it) and
confirm that it has expired. If so, delete the file.

even after performing more drastic measures to
remove the previous "expired" version of TOAD 10.6 Freeware (clearing
all cache files, clearing temp files, deleting hkcu and hklm quest\toad
oracle keys.
Probably unnecessary, but not a bad thing either.

The update "ToadFreeware.exe" refuses to run. It continues
to report "TOAD has encountered an unexpected error. Details: TOAD
cannot access necessary installation files.."
This is a simple one.

First of all, this message is not in any way indicating that toad has
expired.

The real reason is because the exe file is not located in the same
folder that you installed into using the above mentioned *.msi
installer. I mention above that the installer creates a whole pile of
files that toad free needs.

Wherever you have currently got the update file uncompressed into, copy
toadfreeware.exe into the correct location. Once there double-click it
to make sure that it works.

It does? Good, try using your shortcut - if it still works, job done.

If it fails to run, edit the shortcut and ensure it points to
toadfreeware.exe OR rename toadfreeware.exe to toad.exe and try again.

I then downloaded and installed TOAD Oracle Freeware
"ToadforOracle106SetupFreeware.msi" on a new PC that has never seen
TOAD. TOAD is reporting "This version of Toad for Oracle has expired.
You must download a new version before proceeding."
Yes indeed. The installer is created once for every release of Toad, but
never ever replaced until a new Toad comes out. By this I mean that when
Toad 10 comes out Toad Free 10 comes out and a new installer is uploaded.

After 30 days, or whatever, the installed toad file will indeed expire.
It is at this point you need a new upgrade file, not the installed, the
upgrade.

Depending on how long you take between the new toad free installer
coming out, it is entirely possible that when you run it and then try to
run toad, it will give this message.

Try this on your clean PC. Download the update file, unzip it and copy
toadfreeware.exe into the new clean install folder and rename it to
match the expired file already there - it will work.

ONLY the upgrade file is required every time free toad expires. The
installer will always have an expired version - at least after the first
expiry date has passed!

I sir am now 100% positive it is not a client issue.
Indeed you may well be convinced, but you are incorrect I'm afraid. At
least, based on the two bits of evidence you have supplied. (1) the
missing installation files error message on your original PC and (2) the
installed version on a clean PC has expired.

Your clean PC needs an upgrade file extracted into the same location you
installed into, and your original PC needs exactly the same!

Trust me, I'm not a doctor!

I understand the implications of "freeware". Regardless, this reflects
on the entire product line and does not bode well for any Quest
software.
Nope, it reflects badly on the users who were unable to follow the
instructions. I admit that there seems to have been a file name change
from toad.exe to toadfreeware.exe - but I'm advised that this was as a
result of user requests.

As I originally posted, the download works. The installer works, but
installs an expired toad. The upgrade works and installs a renamed file.
To fixz things you must rename the upgraded file back or change your
shortcuts to point at the new filename.

Please reconsider your statements.
No need. I'm afraid the problem is still at your end. I do not work for
Quest, I work for me. I have no connection to Quest except as a happy
user of their Toad product and as a (hopefully) valued member of TeamT a
group of three volunteers who try to help out as and when we can.

Hopefully the above will resolve your problem and give you some pointers
on what to do next time Toad expires.

And the "uppity" comment was not aimed directly and solely at you. It
was a feeble attempt at humour on a day when almost every post was a bad
tempered one regarding a free product.

In summary:

On your original PC:

  • Copy toadfreeware.exe from wherever you have it now into the folder
that you installed the original files into.

  • Delete toad.exe from the original folder.

  • Rename toadfreeware.exe to toad.exe. Your shortcuts will now work.

Alternatively, replace the latter stage and edit your shortcuts to
reference toadfreeware.exe instead of toad.exe. Your shourtcuts will now
work.

On your clean PC:

  • Download the upgrade file into the folder where the existing (expired)
    toad.exe is located.

  • Delete toad.exe.

  • Uncompress the zip file into the current folder.

  • Rename toadfreeware.exe to toad.exe - your shortcut will work; OR

  • Edit the shortcuts as above.

Good luck. I look forward to hearing from you when it's all working.

Bobby is running the toadfreeware.exe from the wrong directory by the
sound of things. I think my reply explains it pretty fully although you
and Greg were much more succint that I was.

I actually quit reading his email after his first sentence. At that point it was clear he did not follow the directions. I must say you’re more patient than most.

Greg's steps worked for me. I just got a brand new shinny windows 7
box last week. I installed the ToadforOracle106SetupFreeware.msi then
followed Greg's steps and I have a valid Free Toad that expires on
30-oct-2011.

Thanks Greg!

I agree with Norm on the installation directory. I just switched computers and I
was appalled that I had so many TOAD directories on my old PC. Now I have a nice
clean version which is hopping swimmingly (A little hidden TOAD reference

rate, he has offered me sound advice on a number of occasions and now I am one

And I don’t really understand the whole freeware mentality of some users.
Freeware is a sneek peek and shouldn’t be used in place of actually
purchasing and using the product on a daily basis for free. Don’t you
think?

Oh and if you agree, please find out how I can get another TOAD coffee mug. I
was coming around the corner at work and in order to avoid spilling coffee on a
coworker, my mug hit the wall. And it was perfect size and shape and I miss it
dearly!

Just wait for a few more releases then, things will get back to normal!

I do not agree that Norm is “whingy and uppity.”
Norm is, in normal circumstances, a pedantic and ranting bl--dy Scot!
At least according to my wife I am! Personally, I'm a big fan of a
"Billy Connolly" style rant from time to time!

As far as I know he is a volunteer and not on the Quest
payroll. Is this correct?
This is indeed the case. I work for myself (Dunbar IT Consultants Ltd)
and any advice I give here is entirely voluntary. TeamT members are not
paid by Quest. I see it as my way of giving back for advice I received
years ago as a fledgling Oracle developer and DBA.

My "life" was saved by someone a lot more experienced than me who
refused payment for spending a good few hours helping me, a complete
stranger, ressurect an Oracle database that had died. I was on my very
first day as a DBA and had received no training. The previous DBA had left!

This person worked with me, over the telephone, until 02:00 in the AM! I
sent him a bottle of finest Whisky for his troubles.

At any rate, he has offered me sound advice on
a number of occasions and now I am one of my work Team’s Toadies!
This is my point, it works!

Thanks Norm and all the great folks at Quest!
Welcome.

I think the main confusion here is with the installer. Toad team creates one
installer when the freeware gets released. Then each month there is simply an
updated EXE. The key item to note is that the complete installer is done just
that once and hence yes it expired. The process is as follows: run the main
installer once, then each month get the updated EXE as per the instructions in
other replies. It sounds like you expected the installer to fix the update issue
– and it is not designed to work that way. I won’t argue the merits
of the approach, I’ll just say that’s how it works and that’s
why you need to closely adhere to the instructions at the end of each timeout
period.

Send me your address Darlene, and I’ll see what I can do

I do. Some people get things for free and are happy. Others get things
for free and expect to have their demands met instantly as if they were
paying support. Others lie in between. I use Linux. I give back by
supporting Open Source projects. (www.firebirdsql.org - I do docs!)

Freeware is a sneek peek and shouldn’t be used in place of
actually purchasing and using the product on a daily basis for free.
We would all like our products to be paid for, but if we offer free
stuff, that is not a use once for 30 days and then never again, then we
should expect people to use it. I used Toad for free when it was way way
back in the early days. Long before it was a Quest product. I even
contributed to it at one point!

I trialled Windows 7 for 90 days. Once done I had to delete it or buy
it. I deleted it. Yuk!

If I found myself in a job where I couldn't use Toad, or buy it, I'd
happily use free toad provided I matched up to the rules and
requirements for using free toad. It's as good a version as full toad.

Don’t you think?
Not quite!

Oh and if you agree, please find out how I can get another TOAD coffee
mug. I was coming around the corner at work and in order to avoid
spilling coffee on a coworker, my mug hit the wall. And it was perfect
size and shape and I miss it dearly!
Funny how we get attached to the simple things in life. (Something else
my wife says frequently!)

Anyway, I used to keep American Bullfrogs as pets for many years.
Unfortunately, they eventually died and sad as it was, I decided to have
them taxidermed. I made them into a pair of open-toad sandals!

(That was a joke too - it's Friday!)
